Scott Adams shares a memorable experience from his first adventure game, Adventureland, involving a bear that players could accidentally kill. After receiving feedback from players who were upset about the bear's death, he decided to change the game to create a more comfortable experience for players. This segment highlights the importance of player feedback in game design and the emotional impact of storytelling in interactive fiction.
"one of the things that comes back to me is I remember in my second knowing the first adventure Adventure land there was a bear and I remember in my original version of the game the bear fell off the ledge and died and you get down in the bottle ledge and you find a dead bear and I either got a letter or somebody talking to me saying you know that really put me off to find out I killed that bear while I was playing this why did you make me kill the bear and so I redid the game and put in a slightly woozy stunned bear down at the bottom and then after that I did not want to put the player in a situation where they were feeling uncomfortable playing the game and so that that is where I went with it now there were some violent instance instances the whole purpose of the count that game had a goal and the goal was to kill vampire but along the way nobody else was getting killed at the same time so it was there it was a definite evil it was the the ultimate monster and it was okay you were wiping out the monster no no innocent bears were being harmed um there's an interesting thing about"
