I'm curious, where is the line for you between a fresh idea and a betrayal to the character?

>> Well, that's a good question. That's a great question.

>> I I think you can't ever get into anything >> [music] >> with Frank that betrays that notion, that that consciously he is never looking for the light.

He is never looking to to to relieve the pain.

He's looking to dive into it.

He's looking to go headfirst into it, to dig into the wound that kind of uh you know is his whole you know life's view now.

I've known a lot of people who put a lot of effort into building walls around their hearts, and I think anybody who does that um there's always cracks, and light always does shine through.

I think it is what makes us kind of quintessentially human.

Um so, I love as much as I I I look for opportunities to turn my back on the audience and to to go to a place where I can't be forgiven, I also love the opportunity to be won back and to be to find those little rays of light.

>> What was the most surreal where am I moment of the whole shoot for you?

>> I think that first day when I visited in Morocco, you were working that day, and I went to the beach just watch them work.

I kind of wanted to get a bit of a jump on how Chris likes to work and just watch kind of from afar.

>> [music] >> And I arrived at the beach and I could not see a single crew member.

You see miles and miles of ships [music] and extras and warriors and horses, and you're asking yourself like where is the crew?

So then they asked me to walk down this beach and every sort of 10 minutes you'd hear rolling and I'd have to lie down and hide behind these dunes and I I kept asking myself like where is where are they rolling?

I can't see the crew anywhere.

And then eventually I got down to where Matt was and his men and all that sort of stuff.

And it really felt at that moment like we were a part of something that had never been done before.

Akin to the sort of Lawrence of Arabia, those movies where they are legend, not just in the quality of the film, but in the size and scale and the ambition of what Chris was trying to do. >> Number three. Number three? >> Kick walk, bro.

>> For the uninitiated, can you explain what it means to achieve unconscious competence? >> Oh, sure, man.

Uh Yeah, look, I mean it's it's something um that they talk about in in Moscow and at the Moscow Art Theater in in terms of learning a new behavior.

So for character building, >> [music] >> they often talk about that to take on a walk or to take on a gesture or to take on a job or a vocation or a dialect, you got to first you got to know what you're doing then you got to start doing it all the time and then if you just put enough time in that box you'll get to a place where you don't even need to think about it you just start doing it.

And I really do think that can be applied to to even psychological things and things you just want to change about your outlook on life.

>> So Tom I've heard you say that you're actually more comfortable playing a character with an American accent as opposed to a British one cuz it creates an immediate separation between you and the character.

Are there any other tricks that help you step into the shoes of a character like Peter Parker?

>> I think physicality for me is like step one with any [music] character.

But the accent for me having an American accent is is [music] almost like a disguise.

You know, the moment that I start speaking with an English accent I feel like I go into like press mode.

And it feels like a kind of a representation of who I am as a person.

But I would love to explore some more British accents because you know, as an island we have some of the most interesting, unique, and fun accents.

[music] And I would love to do some work >> I'm going to regional dialect. >> Yeah, exactly.

You know, I think there's more accents in Britain than any other country. I think so.

>> Why does it always got to come to >> That's not a competition.

Then I'll admit it's a problem, but I would go out on a on a limb to say there are more accents in America than there are in Britain. >> WELL, COME ON. THERE HAS TO BE.

>> You You really think there's more dialects in England than there are in America?

And like three or four weeks before we started shooting, we'd become good friends. We were hanging out.

And then all of a sudden he's like, "Listen, dog. Like I'm Listen, man.

Like I'm going to have to do this [ __ ] Like I'm not going to talk.

I'm going to go full [ __ ] method. I'm not doing it.

I'm going to need to lean on your shoulder."

I'm like, "Yeah, well, whatever, man.

Like if that's what you want to do, that's what you want to do."

And then for like two weeks, not a peep out of him. >> [laughter] >> Right?

And we all know Jon Bernthal.

We all love Jon Bernthal. My man loves to talk. >> [laughter] >> Right?

So, we're sat at restaurants.

And he's writing down his food.

And these are regular restaurants in Ireland.

And I'm having to be like, "I'm sorry about my friend.

He's just a pretentious actor."

>> [laughter] >> And I'm like reading out his order, right?

And then one day we were in a restaurant [laughter] and he had salmon and he said to me, "Can you He wrote down, "Can you ask for some lemon for my salmon?"

>> LEMON ON MY SALMON, BRO. >> WE ALL DO. >> [ __ ] IT.

THAT'S ALL THEY HAD THERE WAS SALMON. >> YEAH.

So the lady, I said, "Excuse me, do you Can I have some lemon, please, for his salmon?"

>> [laughter] >> And maybe she misheard me or something.

So she came and brought this lemon and dropped it in his drink.

In his water and then immediately he WAS LIKE, "I [ __ ] IT.

Oh, [ __ ] >> Jon, is it true that your first acting performance that made your teacher believe in you was a monologue about your mom giving you a catcher's mitt on her deathbed? >> That is very true.

>> [sighs and gasps] >> I went to school to play sports and uh I I had no interest in in being an actor.

You just had to take a an arts requirement, so everybody suggested that I take this acting class.

It was like 200 people in a theater, but I wound up, because of the [ __ ] that I was, I wound up in the the serious theater kid, you know, intro to acting class and uh it was insane.

And the very first thing that we had to do uh the first assignment was to bring in something that meant a lot to each of us and share it with the rest of the class.

And I couldn't believe the level of emotion, the emoting, and the talking about the Blues Traveler CD that their boyfriend had given them before school, or their grandfather's corncob pipe.

And I didn't have anything, so I yeah, I just I grabbed my catcher's glove and just launched into the story about how my my mom had given it to me on on her deathbed and and I was crying my eyes out and uh I looked around everybody else was crying their eyes out and I said, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait, wait, I'm just doing the acting here."

And yeah, and then but and then that teacher, Alma Becker, she um she said, "Look, you uh she she she read my ass about violating the sanctity of her studio."

But then she said, "You know, your punishment is you got to audition for the play."

And uh that's what got me in my first play and almost one that sent me to Russia and uh I got her picture up in my dressing room now.

She married my wife and I.
11:58
Um she passed a few years back, but uh she saved my life and it's a true uh testament to the power of a teacher and and that that one woman that one day, you know, changed everything, changed the entire course of my life and I really feel like I owe everything to her.

So, Christopher Nolan has referred to the Odyssey as the marvel of its day.

Does that seem like an apt analogy to you guys?

>> They're really emotional.

I think all of the best Marvel characters are ones that are really relatable and [clears throat] have real emotions, you know?

And I think that when you read [music] the poem, it's super super emotional and really just about the characters with one of the most intricately told family dramas that I've seen and neither one gets in the way of the other.

You never feel like the scale is overshadowing the heart, and the heart is never dampening down the scale.

And I think Chris is probably the only person that can do that, because it's a real skill set to be able to do that.

>> [music] >> You know, there's so many different communities that feel seen in the Marvel world, and I think, you know, the Odyssey is a globe-trotting adventure and and experiences so many different cultural elements of that time, [music] I guess.

What is it about those 8 minutes?

>> You don't want to have to demand that focus the moment you walk on stage.

I think that's probably what it is.

But, I'll tell you that time, that's my favorite time of the day, without a doubt.

So, those 8 minutes, whatever those are, I've always thought that the theater itself, there's just a lot of ghosts there.

There's so much spirit there.

There's so much There's There's so much emotion and heart that's been left on that stage, and I feel like it's an unbelievable time um to kind of communicate with folks that might not be here anymore and I it's it's my favorite part of the day without a doubt.

>> On that topic, what's a ghost light and why is it that some theaters never go dark?

>> Yes, for that exact reason.

You keep you keep the lights on for the ghosts, you know, and and I don't know why I don't know it is just universally and forever sort of understood and every person who spent a lot of time in the theater just it's just something you feel in your bones.

>> Is whistling on stage or saying Macbeth, do you guys consider that bad luck in a theater?

>> I mean there would be people that would be very upset with you if you didn't say the Scottish play.

I I try not to let myself get hung up on superstition because I'm the type of person that can really really get sucked into it.
