Terry Crews Hallucinates While Eating Spicy Wings | Hot Ones

0:03

OH, STAYED ON TOP.

0:15

HEY, WHAT'S GOING ON EVERYBODY?

0:15

FOR FIRST WE FEAST, I'M Sean Evans and you're watching Hot Ones.

0:18

It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.

0:21

And today, by popular demand, I'm joined by Terry Crews.

0:23

You know him from his many films, TV shows, and of course you can catch him on Fox's award-winning hit show Brooklyn Nine-Nine, now in its fifth season.

0:31

Terry, welcome to the show. doing? Good, Terry. How are you? I'm good. Yeah, I'm hungry.

0:35

You know, I fast every day, so it's we waited till 2:00. It's now 2:00. We can officially eat. We can do it.

0:43

How are you with hot food?

0:44

I've had some really hot stuff before and didn't die, so I'm okay.

0:49

You ready to get it going? I'm ready.

1:05

All right, so this first one is Valentina. All right. Here we go. Mhm.

1:17

So, I want to start by talking about an interesting time in your life, the purgatory between when your NFL career ended and before the Hollywood dream began.

1:25

Because as I understand it, you were doing temp jobs, you were sweeping factory floors, and then especially interesting to me, working as a part of Ice Cube's security detail. I was location security.

1:36

And so, I would do a bunch of different movies.

1:38

It just so happened I was on Next Friday.

1:40

Cuz I was like the biggest guy, so they would assign me right outside his trailer.

1:47

And he parked and the whole thing and I'm like, "Hey, Mr. Cube."

1:48

And then he was like, "Yeah, what's up?"

1:50

You know, it was really like dismissive and and the whole thing.

1:53

And I just took care of business.

1:55

I mean, I I really wanted to be, you know, a good security guard.

1:56

I didn't want to be like, "Here's my demo tape and here I want to be an actor and all that."

2:02

Cuz I wasn't even into that at the time.

2:04

What was wild is that once I was an extra in Training Day, that's when he was like, "Hey, that's the dude that was out there and what, you know, doing security and the whole thing."

2:13

And then I got my opportunity for Friday After Next.

2:18

And dude, it changed our lives forever.

2:22

And it's interesting, too, how in this business it can come full circle that way.

2:25

You know, at one point you're just giving a little head nod to Cube and then the next time he's putting you in the movie, you know? Exactly, exactly.

2:30

Cuz I wanted to get in the business.

2:32

So, it was my whole thing. Right, that's it. All right.

2:43

So, you're Renaissance man with a resume to match, but I think the fans would kill me if I didn't focus on Brooklyn Nine-Nine for a wing. Mhm.

2:50

What's the origin story of the yogurt thing?

2:52

It's funny cuz once we started filming, you know, I would always eat yogurt.

2:54

You know, it was one of the things and and some writer was watching and picking it up and they thought, "What is a really healthy thing that Terry Jeffords would love?"

3:04

And it was like, "Yogurt."

3:04

And it just became this iconic thing.

3:05

And I'm still waiting for my big big giant deal, yogurt deal.

3:13

Who's been your favorite cameo on the show and why is it Marshawn Lynch? Why? Marshawn was great, dog.

3:18

He was really really good.

3:20

I think Eva Longoria was awesome.

3:22

Eva's always been a friend and she killed it. Who's the set clown?

3:25

Who's the funniest off camera?

3:28

It's weird cuz Andy's a very serious guy.

3:30

You know, he he's got he calculates his comedy, you know, he's always like that.

3:33

But Chelsea Peretti is hilarious all the time. We laugh non-stop.

3:37

She is the life of the party and I truly think she's probably one of the funniest people TV has ever seen. Mhm. I Portland. Mhm. No bro.

3:56

Can you talk to me how you went from not knowing a damn thing about computers to all of the sudden building a custom state-of-the-art gaming PC with your son? Wow. Wow.

4:06

That right there was really cool.

4:08

I remember watching my son playing video games, playing on a computer.

4:12

I was like, "What you playing?"

4:14

He was like, "I'm not playing, dad."

4:16

And I was like, "Well, okay. What are you doing?"

4:18

He was like, "I'm watching." Excuse me. I was like, "What?"

4:22

And I found out he was actually watching people play.

4:24

And I was like, "Oh, this is weird."

4:27

I didn't understand what was happening and I said, "I've got to find a way to connect with his world."

4:33

Cuz one thing I remember is that my father never wanted to connect with what I was doing.

4:37

Like, I was like, "Hey dad, check this out."

4:39

And he'd be like, "I'm busy."

4:41

You know, and you're like, "Ugh."

4:42

And I I never forget how that felt.

4:45

And I said, "I'm going to get into what he's all about."

4:47

But once I played Battle Field, I saw that they had these tower computers and they were playing with keyboards and mice.

4:53

I was like, "Oh wait, I didn't even know about that."

4:57

And I remember they were like, "You got to build it. That makes it better."

4:59

You know, I was like, "Really?"

5:02

Like I was like, "There's no way that I can pay and all that like."

5:03

But then I said, "No, this is what me and my son can do together. It's the new ham radio."

5:10

All of a sudden things started to make sense.

5:12

The more you stayed around and you're like, "Oh, that goes in there."

5:15

And the sound card goes Look at this right here.

5:17

Oh, and the graphics card is spinning. It's spinning.

5:19

And it was so satisfying.

5:23

And man, it changed my life forever. Changed my life.

5:26

And it's interesting because, you know, I think that the video game obsession it freaks a lot of parents out when they see their kids getting into it.

5:31

But as somebody who went through that experience, how did it change your perspective as a parent when it comes to video games?

5:38

Well, I mean I saw the potential.

5:38

I saw how beautiful the that whole thing is.

5:43

It's no different than reading comic books.

5:45

And I thought, "What a beautiful thing." It's beautiful.

5:47

I'm all choked up, and it's not the wind. The queen, the crown. Mhm. Mhm. That's funny.

6:00

It's got a picture of a leopard on it. Oh man. Damn.

6:03

So, I wanted to talk to you about your NFL career because as a Hard Knocks fan, I'm fascinated by the sort of bottom of the roster dog-eat-dog competition that goes on.

6:11

And you're someone who experienced that with a handful of teams, and I know that it's a very tough business.

6:17

At what point did you feel most chewed up and spit out?

6:21

Well, it had to be I was 1997.

6:25

I got a tryout with the 49ers, and they treated me so bad.

6:29

I mean, they treated me like I was dirt.

6:34

He was working me out like he was mad that he had to be out there.

6:35

It was just a psychological mess.

6:37

I was a little farther away from him than I am with you, and he threw the ball at me, and I put my hand up, and my finger was like an L.

6:47

It totally went sideways, and I snapped it back, and I was like, "Bro, what the What are you doing?"

6:52

You know, he was like, "Come on. Come on.

6:54

Let's get the workout going." I was like, "I'm done."

6:57

And I remember coming home to my wife, and I said, "Never again." That was it. I was I was so done. This is your label. Mhm. Mhm. It's tasty. Very tasty. Thank you, Terry. I appreciate that.

7:18

I was thinking it just got heat, but this one got taste. Mhm. I like it. All right.

7:21

So, we have a recurring segment on our show called Explain That Gram.

7:24

We do a deep dive on our guest's Instagram, pull interesting pictures that need more context.

7:29

So, I'll show you the picture, and then if you could just tell me the bigger story. Does that sound good? That's good. All right. Hit me. All right, Terry. That's interesting. It's a great show.

7:36

You're having fun, Terry? fun now.

7:38

Tell me afterwards if you had a good time. Okay.

7:40

First things first, Yeah. Let me tell you that.

7:43

Flint Academy, very aggressive pose for the short shorts era. Terry Crews. dude.

7:48

It was a magical idea because, you know, you got to know I had the George Gervin Iceman poster in my room.

7:55

And he was sitting on his block of ice with two basketballs.

7:56

And I was like, "Dude, I need like my own George Gervin poster thing."

8:00

And it was really bad idea.

8:03

I didn't even lotion my knees, dog.

8:06

Oh my god, LOOK AT HOW DUSTY THE KNEE IS.

8:11

UP NEXT, YOU'RE ON HORSEBACK.

8:11

The horse, isn't it your favorite animal?

8:13

I hear it's your favorite animal.

8:16

First of all, I love horses.

8:16

When I was a young man, I used to always want to ride horses.

8:22

Going up in Flint, Michigan, they were like, "Oh man, man, that horse going to kill you, man.

8:24

That horse going to step on your head, dog.

8:26

It's going to be horrible."

8:27

And then you finally go, "Yeah, yeah, that's kind of stupid.

8:30

Yeah, uh I shouldn't I don't want to ride horses."

8:33

Finally went to ride horses and learn how to do a gallop and do that. And I had the best time.

8:37

Let me tell you, it was the best time.

8:38

And I was like, "Damn it, don't ever let anybody talk you out of what you want to do." And they were all wrong.

8:46

Terry, you could have gone your whole life without knowing the joy of riding a horse in the sunset.

8:52

Yeah, and this is me on my day off.

8:54

Here you are with the iron The Iron Addict, CT Fletcher. CT Fletcher.

8:57

We got a background that's the same.

9:00

We both had a major major issues with our fathers.

9:02

And my father was very abusive.

9:04

Very very I mean, one of my earliest memories was uh him, you know, basically hitting my mom in the face when I was 5 years old. You know what I mean?

9:14

And that made me want to live because you feel like, "Oh my god, if he's hitting her, what's he going to do to me?"

9:21

My whole life I was totally obsessed with being strong.

9:24

Psychologically, through a lot of therapy, you learn that you're trying to protect yourself.

9:27

I remember I got beat up a couple times in high school.

9:31

I said, "That'll never happen again." You know?

9:32

And you had to fight to get in the school. It was really nuts. I want to go to class.

9:35

And they're like, "You ain't going nowhere.

9:38

You ain't going nowhere, nigger." You're like, "Oh."

9:40

Uh, you know, and man, I said, "No, not me. I'm going to survive."

9:43

And we're kindred spirits, man. That's my man. Too serious? No, no, no.

9:52

Okay, cuz I'm I'm getting all deep now, man.

9:54

I'm in a That's what we want.

9:55

That's what the wings do.

9:56

The hot sauce brings that in you. bring out the fire.

9:59

They bring out the heat in you. Dirty Ooh. Okay. Okay.

10:08

That No, it doesn't taste as good as the hot ones. I'll say that right now.

10:12

My man, Terry, thank you very much.

10:15

See, you can't get pecs like those without having some discipline in your diet, but I know that on the cheat days, you like to throw down in the kitchen.

10:23

Do you have any cheat day kitchen hacks?

10:26

I make a killer bread pudding with orange butter sauce.

10:29

Take French bread, you let it get about a day old, and I mean, literally, you want to have a little crunch on it.

10:33

Slice it up, you put some raisins on top, you pour like a cup of butter on the baddest butter you can find, okay?

10:40

The Make sure it gets all into the bread, the whole deal.

10:44

Then, you blend up about six eggs and some milk and some sugar and some spices, like some cinnamon and nutmeg. it.

10:51

And then, you blend it and mix this really big cream.

10:53

And then, put that in there, blend it up like crazy, pour it over the sliced bread, let it soak.

10:57

I let that sucker soak until it all the bread is just engorged and full, and you make sure you pat it all down, and raisins are all in there.

11:05

Bake that sucker for about 45, 50 minutes.

11:07

Then, I make some orange butter sauce, which is more butter, more butter, with a little with some sugar and about a couple tablespoons of orange juice to give it a little twang.

11:17

And then, you pour that sugary mixture over there.

11:19

What it basically is is a glazed donut in a pan.

11:24

And now, you will be in a carb coma.

11:26

It's like, you know, it's it's it's a major crash, cuz you'll you'll get this energy that just go and then all of a sudden the carbs just run through your system.

11:38

Oh man, The Walking Dead. No.

11:44

I look like that guy right there like There's a guy on the bottle right Okay. Oh. Mhm. Oh, that hurts. Mhm. I took a big bite, too.

11:57

Getting serious over here, Terry. Oh man. Oh. Not tasting good. Mhm. But it's hot.

12:08

So despite your grueling shoot schedule, I've heard you say that you work out up to 2 hours per day. Yes.

12:13

What's something that was easy for you in the weight room at 25 that's now kicking your ass as you approach 50?

12:19

You know, I used to be able to like have a 90 second, you know, then you hit it and do two or three things at the same time, run the gauntlet. Now I'm like 5 minutes. I'm good.

12:29

You know, I got to give me 5, 10 minutes, you know, between sets. Get those lungs back.

12:35

And it's like I got to come back. I thought.

12:38

What are the fitness politics like when you do a movie like The Expendables?

12:39

Is the craft service all protein shakes and sweet potatoes?

12:44

Do they put a Gold's Gym on the lot?

12:47

we don't work out together just because it's too you know, the challenge is too deep. What was wild is um Woo.

12:57

I I There's the competition when you Got to pop Get those kinds of dogs in there.

13:01

But I don't like to compete.

13:01

I don't believe in competing, but it's inevitable, you know, and you'll do something and you'll hurt yourself just because you're trying to keep up with people.

13:09

I have to be very careful who I work out with because they draw you in and you want to be there and then all of a sudden your pec is like popping.

13:17

You know, you're in the hospital.

13:17

You know, I've seen it happen too many times. Okay. Ooh. Oh. Mhm. Oh, man. Yeah. Oh. It's nothing. Yeah. Yeah.

13:42

There's some consequences to the bomb, for sure. Oh. Oh. Ooh. I'm going milk. It's okay. It's okay. No shame in that.

13:53

So, everyone knows Terry Crews, the actor.

13:55

Terry Crews, the football player.

13:57

But, some fans might be surprised to know that you had an art scholarship mixed in with that athletic full ride at Western Michigan.

14:03

Is it true that you used to moonlight by painting portraits for your NFL teammates making $5,000 a pop? exactly what I did.

14:11

I used to go back in the locker room after I got cut.

14:16

And I remember cuz I had That was my only way to survive. Oh. And they would Oh.

14:23

And they would literally be like, "Man, you're pretty good."

14:27

I was like, "Oh, thank you."

14:27

Oh, man, I'm getting light-headed. Yeah. Oh, man.

14:31

And they would say, "You're pretty good."

14:32

And usually, football players are pretty egotistical. Yeah.

14:36

They probably like the idea of a portrait.

14:38

I could put a picture of you over a city and you know, you put this over Imagine this over your mantelpiece and you will love it."

14:45

And they were like, "Oh, yeah, we'll do it."

14:46

And And I really I did a lot of that. That's how I survived. Oh, crap.

14:53

Careful around your eyes, Terry. Oh, yeah.

14:58

What's the last thing you drew or painted? Ooh.

15:01

I actually did a pilot with Andy Samberg about a show that I'm doing called Color Me Terry where I draw celebrities as I interview them.

15:11

Kind of like a Hot Ones with art. Oh, man. Where are you at, Terry? Okay. Okay. I'm ready to move. All right. Oh, my god. Okay. Okay. How much more we got?

15:31

You get high off this [ __ ] Yeah. Yeah, for sure.

15:32

That's That's how this show exists.

15:34

I don't I don't care about the YouTube views.

15:36

I'm just chasing the dragon, dude.

15:38

This is some This is some like My voice is changing on me.

15:43

You might turn into three people, man. Oh my god. Oh. STAYED ON TOP. YES.

16:14

SO, WE'VE HAD A LOT OF TALENTED ACTORS with range on this show, but I'm going to be real with you.

16:17

Your IMDb page there's just something different about it. It's magnificent.

16:21

I want to bounce roles off of you, and I want you to tell me which one was the most underrated. Does that sound good? Mhm.

16:28

Team Money brawling MMA fighters in a hamster wheel on Battle Dome. Yes.

16:32

The Charles Spencer belting out A Thousand Miles in White Chicks.

16:36

President Camacho busting shots from the presidential dais in Idiocracy.

16:43

President Camacho's underrated. Because of no one. It was a bomb. The movie did not work. No one saw it.

16:53

And then years later years later people caught it. Oh my god, I'm hurting.

16:59

And then your characters, they tend to be insanely quotable.

17:01

What is the Terry Crews-ism that gets yelled at you most often in airports? Power. Everybody does that.

17:11

And then the other one is Remember this [ __ ] at Christmas.

17:15

From The Expendables, the first one. Oh my god. So.

17:20

Hi Terry, here's a a souvenir napkin. How you doing, my man? It's nothing, man. All right, Terry. Cheers.

17:30

to get an Oscar with this one. Let me do this.

17:33

I love all my people out there. I LOVE YOU ALL. I LOVE YOU. DUDE, I'M LIGHT-HEADED.

17:40

I can't I don't know if I can walk out of here.

17:50

One more wing to go, and this one is the last dab.

17:52

We call it the last dab because it's tradition around here to put a little extra on the last wing.

17:58

You don't have to if you don't want to. Okay, no excuses. It's okay.

18:00

Don't go for It's okay, Terry. It's okay, Terry. You don't have to.

18:04

YES, PUT THAT EXTRA ON THERE, DAMMIT. I'M A GLUTTON. Punish me. What a comeback story. Terry. Be careful, though. It's good. That's good. That's good. That's good. Oh, I hate you all.

18:18

Remember how much fun you were having around? Explain that, Graham. Yeah, I know. My eyes can't open.

18:20

Why don't I Why can't I open my eyes? Mhm. Oh my god. You all right, my man? good, man. You're doing good. You're doing great.

18:31

You're doing great, Terry.

18:34

I survived it and I felt like I could do this. All right. Goodbye. Goodbye, Terry. Goodbye, cool dude. Dude. Oh, man.

18:59

Dude, why did I sign up for this, man?

19:01

It is always amazing to me.

19:01

It is always amazing to me. It baffles me.

19:04

I scratch my head, but I'm very grateful.

19:06

It's been a revolving door. I don't know how. Oh, man. Am I here? Find me, man. Can you see me? Can you catch me? Oh, man.

19:15

I feel like Steve Jobs in the '70s. Tripping a LITTLE BIT. CRAZY APP AFTER THIS. All right, Terry.

19:22

So, whether it's walking a red carpet or eating the wings of death, you're very comfortable in the spotlight, but it seems to me like you're most at home when you're barking into your phone from the driver's seat of your car. Yes.

19:35

Letting your followers know that they have one more set in them. Yes.

19:38

So, now that the wings have kicked into your empty stomach, the last dab settling into your soul, what's the Terry Crews advice for the fans out there that just keep hitting the snooze button?

19:50

There's a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson that I have used for my life.

19:57

And if the biggest thing ever is that God will not have his work made manifest by cowards. Love it.

20:05

Dude, when you realize and internalize that, that nothing on this earth Now, that doesn't mean not being scared.

20:14

What it means is doing it anyway.

20:14

Taking that last bite of that wing anyway.

20:21

Being willing to let PEOPLE SEE YOU SNAP IN FRONT OF EVERYBODY. AH!

20:25

WHAT, [ __ ] TERRY, I HAVE CHILLS going down my spine.

20:31

I'm not sure if they're the words or if it's the death sauce, but either way, I feel great.

20:36

And looking at you, I can tell that you feel great, too.

20:40

Terry Crews, I love you too, Terry. a spiritual experience.

20:44

It was a climb up the mountain together. it.

20:47

And now, I just want to roll out the red carpet for you, my man. it.
