Shane Gillis Pounds Milk While Eating Spicy Wings | Hot Ones

0:00

It's great dude.

0:03

It's one of my favorite things.

0:14

Hey, what's going on everybody?

0:14

For First We Feast, I'm Sean Evans and you're watching Hot Ones.

0:17

It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.

0:19

And today we're joined by Shane Gillis.

0:21

He's a stand-up comedian whose latest special Beautiful Dogs is currently streaming on Netflix.

0:24

Check out Matt and Shane's Secret Podcast wherever you listen.

0:27

And he has a brand new comedy series Tires, which is likewise streaming on Netflix.

0:31

And breaking news, just got word a second season already picked up.

0:36

Congratulations on that, Shane, and welcome to the show. Thank you very much.

0:39

You strike me as a guy who can throw down on some wings.

0:41

How are you around hot sauce?

0:44

I I can definitely throw down some wings, but uh I don't think I'm going to do great. And I'm truly nervous.

0:51

I don't know why I did this. For real.

0:51

I mean, you're great, but Well, there's no turning back now, Shane.

0:57

Are you ready to get started? Yeah. Okay. It's great. I told you I would.

1:27

Nothing to worry about, Shane. Nothing to worry about. Seen the show.

1:31

I know where this goes, dude. That's good.

1:39

What makes tire shops funny?

1:39

Or at least a setting that can hold the full weight of a workplace comedy?

1:45

What makes a tire shop funny?

1:45

It's just uh I worked in a tire shop in Philly for a little.

1:49

And uh it's just crazy people working together. Dudes that are nuts.

1:55

Every day like physical fights. Like, it's it's crazy.

1:59

It's kind of amazing that you were able to make this show with a close-knit group of long-time collaborators.

2:02

How much of Tires is scripted beat by beat, and then how much of it is, you know, you and your buddies screwing around on camera to find the comedy?

2:11

So, that's that's what McKeever does really well is he gets us he has we have a script.

2:17

We have a full script every time.

2:18

And then we always get the lines that we need to for the story, and then we get to [ __ ] around for as long as we want till we're done.

2:26

Like, he'll literally just be like, "All right, go. You got anything else?"

2:27

It's like, "No, I think I'm done."

2:28

And then he'll he'll keep it moving. I feel great.

2:38

Look at those mechanics, yeah. Giving that a rip. It's great. Two for two. Yeah. I yeah.

2:50

So, you know, almost every comedy special begins with a vignette to set the tone, and that can range from a comedian heroically walking through the city or pensively smoking a cigarette backstage in black and white.

3:00

Obviously, there's not a ton to do with that space, but every comedian does seem to expend at least a little creative energy on it. Yeah.

3:09

Do you think that stuff is important? Not at all.

3:13

No, I kind of get annoyed when they do that. Just walk on stage. That's what I think.

3:18

What's the internal calculus like for naming a comedy special?

3:19

Like, is it something that you labor over for a long time, or is it more spontaneous than one would think?

3:25

It was pretty spontaneous.

3:25

There was a I was doing a show in Austin, Texas, and the guy who books Rogan's club, Adam Eget, I got done with my set and he was like, "That's the name of the special."

3:35

It was Beautiful Dogs, and I was like, "All right, great."

3:37

Once if somebody else names it for you, it's a lot easier instead of trying to be cool and creative. Took a small bite. It's great. It's great. It's good. Yeah.

3:54

Yeah, little uh saltiness to it a little bit.

3:57

My manager's here and she's really really excited about this.

4:00

For real, she's [ __ ] delighted that she knows how upset I am about this.

4:04

All day I was like this is going to suck.

4:07

You know doing this show you're going to love it.

4:08

I was like you'd [ __ ] do it.

4:09

She was like I would never do it. Well, you know what?

4:11

Yeah, we have extra wings, you know, sometimes oh That was a light bulb moment for you. going to.

4:20

So in a recent profile from the New Yorker there was a mention of US history memorabilia hanging from the walls of your apartment.

4:25

Of the commemoratives that you own is there one that you describe as your holy grail?

4:31

You have a Nazi no I thought that was funny no one else did.

4:35

Uh I have a a painting of um It's called the Absolution at Gettysburg. It's pretty sick.

4:42

It's Father Corby was the Irish Brigade's chaplain and he's giving them a [ __ ] goodbye before they all die. It's pretty nice.

4:53

Inspiring to you or what is it what is it doing?

4:56

Yeah, when I'm playing video games I go man those guys they went hard. It's it's not bad. I can do this one.

5:08

Got some smokiness to them.

5:08

You can do them all so far Shane. Mhm.

5:16

But I know what's coming.

5:18

Don't psych yourself out.

5:18

Just take your wins as you get them over here, you know?

5:23

Is there a type of rumor audience that you would describe as your comedy nightmare?

5:27

Now I do shows sometimes the crowd's too rowdy. Mhm.

5:31

There's dudes that are like like the whole time.

5:34

And that gets a little like Uh Bakersfield, California was probably the worst show I've had.

5:39

What happened in Bakersfield?

5:40

Uh it was just like dudes that worked on oil rigs that showed up and were just screaming they were hammered screaming the whole time.

5:48

My buddy went on stage first hosting and before he got a word out someone was like, "Where the [ __ ] Shane?"

5:54

Oh, no, this is going to be a nightmare.

6:00

Yeah, it's a play on Chairman Meow. Yeah.

6:03

The evil dictator that killed millions and millions of people.

6:06

Yeah, but this is like a fun cartoon cat, all right, Shane?

6:09

What's the next hot sauce?

6:09

[ __ ] What are we doing here?

6:14

So, you know, as a football fan, you hear all kinds of stories about offensive linemen being disgusting.

6:17

Like Broncos guard Mark Schlereth getting that nickname Stink because he used to piss his pads during games.

6:23

What's like the most disgusting thing you've ever experienced in the trenches?

6:29

I do want to I was not a college athlete.

6:30

I played one season and quit.

6:33

That's all right, that counts.

6:33

It's You can check that box. Um Guys would throw up. A lot of puking.

6:40

People would piss their pants, yeah.

6:40

My friends have [ __ ] their pants at practice.

6:44

Have you at all gotten swept up into the like WNBA hype that's going on right now? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Definitely, man. I love it. WNBA, you kidding me? Can't get enough.

6:56

It's [ __ ] high-flying action.

7:03

No, I I have not, but good luck if you're doing it. It's [ __ ] hot. Yeah.

7:12

This is where the game changes. I can tell. Like you're skeptical. You're going back in. You got to eat it.

7:26

What's the worst thing that's happened to somebody on this show?

7:29

Well Someone puke before?

7:31

Uh not on set, or at least that I know about.

7:32

Um one time I almost choked to death on Oh, really?

7:37

Yeah, with Jon Bernthal sitting across from me. That's awesome.

7:40

I took like a piece of chicken, you know, and he like said something I did a little laugh and I breathed in just a little bit and I felt this piece of chicken like like vacuum seal in my throat.

7:48

It goes from like this jovial kind of talk show vibe to people slowly realizing there might be a problem and then I remember my own internal dialogue being like how sad a parable is this, you know what I mean?

8:00

Like the chicken wing talk show host goes out on his shield on the show on the first wing.

8:07

So it that way, that's actually It's kind of awesome. you should die.

8:12

I have a feeling I might die by choking on a chicken wing for real.

8:16

No, no, I made that mistake.

8:16

I made that mistake so you don't have to, Shane. That one's hot. It hurts already. Pause.

8:36

Who is this [ __ ] for though?

8:38

Right, like Who's sitting there eating this? Right.

8:42

Conan I watched Conan rub it all over his [ __ ] face. Committing to the bit. Committed to that bit.

8:45

It was a weird It's a bad bit to choose. That's a crazy bit. Well, you know what?

8:50

On the topic of Conan, you know, you did a 6 and 1/2 hour long marathon podcast breaking down every single president.

8:57

We asked Conan this question, but I'm curious your response.

8:59

Like do you have an all-time favorite mediocre president?

9:03

I think they say you Ulysses S.

9:03

Grant was not a good president, but he's my favorite.

9:08

He failed at the beginning and then became a general. It's pretty sick. He was kind of a loser.

9:12

He got in trouble for being drunk.

9:15

He worked for like his father-in-law's drug store.

9:18

He was like a clerk when the Civil War broke out and by the end of it he was commanding the entire Damn. Northern army. Yeah, he was a beast.

9:25

Who is the most physically attractive US president, be honest. Ooh.

9:29

Obama was a handsome guy. There's no denying that.

9:32

young young W was kind of handsome.

9:32

He was charming in that kind of half-wit way.

9:43

This one's called The Bomb Beyond Insanity.

9:55

That wry smile tells me that you recognize immediately that it's it hurts. Yeah, it's awesome. This is great, dude.

10:06

These are my favorite things. Oh, [ __ ] I know. I know. I know.

10:11

And all these years later, it gets no easier. It's getting worse. I know.

10:15

It's I can't take it, man.

10:17

I'll be honest with you, it's not going to stop here.

10:21

And this is another one, an atomic bomb. Yeah. Nice.

10:25

There's a lot of like mass death in all these hot sauces.

10:28

Hot sauce marketing is a little weird that way, you know?

10:30

There's a lot of like leaning into hell.

10:31

There's a lot of leaning into violence, you know?

10:33

And there's a lot of range over here. I get it. It's funny.

10:39

To market to dudes like pirates. Pirate's hot sauce.

10:45

Off the top of your head and without thinking about it too much, what's your Mount Rushmore of gas station snacks?

10:49

You know, I feel like comedians really are like the ultimate arbiters of road food.

10:54

Lately, I've just been getting [ __ ] like beef jerky.

10:56

Sunflower seeds are good. Ranch sunflower seeds. That's two.

11:00

Uh Cool Ranch Doritos are pretty good. Like ah, man.

11:11

Every once in a while, you get you see some Dunkaroos in there. Oh, yeah.

11:14

That'll bring bring you back.

11:15

Dude, this Do you have more milk?

11:19

Yeah, we have a whole 'nother pitcher for you. Go for it. Yes.

11:22

But I will say, Shane, be careful because sometimes like a milk problem in this in this context can be worse than a hot sauce problem. Yeah.

11:31

Just drinking too much milk?

11:33

It's just the the dairy, the hot sauce, the chemistry, the mixture.

11:35

You know, even even without the hot sauce, like if you just try to crush milk, you can end up with problems, you know? I've crushed milk. Go ahead. I'm just Break the seal. You can go straight out. That's yours. This one's peppers up. [ __ ] dude.

12:11

The bomb kind of clears the paint. Yeah. what I mean?

12:13

Like it's hard to follow that kind of act.

12:18

I took a pretty small bite. It's all right. No shame in that. No shame in that, Shane.

12:23

But still surviving over here.

12:25

What stands out in your memory as the funniest prank phone call you've ever pulled off successfully?

12:32

I was in college and we thought it'd be funny to call my parents and tell them I got arrested with drugs in North Carolina and they screamed. They're very angry.

12:39

And then I finally got a hold I I think I might have forgotten till the next day.

12:44

To be like, "Oh, [ __ ] We got to call them." Uh I don't know.

12:48

That's That was off I haven't thought of that in forever.

12:50

So, I might have just made that whole story up.

12:54

Well, there's no way to know. That's fine. I'll do it. It's [ __ ] I'm scared. Here you go.

13:08

Oh, [ __ ] There's more than It's all right. Can you take a big bite? Of course. That's how we roll. Closing it out. Fine. Let's go.

13:23

I mean, I'm happy to be here, for real, but and you're great. I'm sorry. I'm All right. Laughing through it.

13:40

And you know, Shane, I would say as much as you like this talk whatever, on the outside you do hold it in, you know? Mhm.

13:51

I still I think it's hard it's hard to talk though with that, you know? Right.

13:55

And then here we are creating a talk show. You don't realize it. This is making me laugh.

13:58

I found like it reminds me of you you know how like every once in a while you get really when you get drunk and then you haven't talked for like an hour and you sit there and you're like I'm in complete control and someone's like what's up and you're like hey you want to fight?

14:12

Oh [ __ ] That happened that HAPPENED LAST NIGHT. AND AGAIN TODAY. Again today.

14:20

But the good news is, Shane Gillis, the wings of death are behind us.

14:25

And just one more sort of brain exercise, all right? Before we roll credits.

14:31

And I want you to try to estimate as accurately as possible, okay?

14:37

The amount of sheer hours of your life you've spent podcasting. Oh, wow. Um Mhm. Jesus Christ.

14:55

Uh I for real can't even guess.

14:59

Probably a thousand hours. Well, you know what?

15:06

That's a week and a half of your life well spent, Shane.

15:10

Sometimes sometimes it can backfire. That's true.

15:13

Every once in a while it comes back to get you.

15:16

But taking on the wings of death, living to tell the tale, and now there's nothing left to do but roll out the red carpet for you, Shane Gillis.

15:20

This camera, this camera, this camera, let the people know what you have going on in your life.

15:25

Yeah, check out Tires on Netflix.

15:30

And Matt and Shane's Secret Podcast. And that's it.

15:35

And see, I'll be in 5 weeks I'll be playing NCAA football.

15:40

Creating Shane Gillis 99 everything, just letting it cook, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Holy [ __ ] dude. All right.

15:51

Well, hell yeah, that was awesome. Thank you, guys.

15:54

And it wasn't that bad until that the bomb. The bomb, right? Yeah.

15:57

Like like sort of like six it takes a step. yeah. That one got me.

16:01

Six takes a step and then seven takes another step and then eight is like five steps and then nine kind of brings it back down a little bit, you know. My stomach is [ __ ] up. I drank Too much milk. I told you.

16:14

Oh, [ __ ] Hey, what's going on, Hot Ones fans? This is Sean Evans.
