It's lovely to see you both, and especially at the same time.
It's lovely to see you both, and especially at the same time.
I feel like really privileged to be able to chat to you both because we've seen you on stage like what is it?
24, 25 times you've shared a stage together.
I mean, this is a real friendship, true friendship here.
>> I guess that's true, yeah. Damn. >> Yeah.
>> [laughter] >> We are [snorts] nothing if not factual here at Apple. We love to do the data.
We have the data at hand. We have the data.
>> I love me some statistics. I love it.
>> Uh we'll talk about the video, we'll talk about the song, we'll talk about all of it.
But let's just go back to the friendship and and how you met.
I don't think I've ever asked either of you that cuz I've never had a reason to, but now you're both here.
Who can remember how you actually first met?
>> I remember meeting you in the studio.
You were working >> Yeah. >> on I think sour. >> Yeah. >> Yeah.
And >> It's been a long time coming.
>> I remember the first time I was I remember the first time I'm exactly where I was when I heard Pink Pony Club for the first time and I was like, "Damn, that song's amazing."
>> And if there's so long ago, I mean, I we've known each other for so many years.
It's just It's just, you know, it's awesome to have such a such a long lovely friendship. >> So yeah.
>> Yeah, it's been really special to to see it come together on tour and to see it be very real, obviously, and also for you two, I'd imagine, for both of you to have ascended at such a at such a quick pace through the quality of your music and the hard work you put in, but to have each other at times, I'm sure, just to be able to, if nothing else, just have something to laugh to laugh about it was. Do you know what I mean?
Or at least just put it in perspective with Olivia, you know?
>> I think that it's so important to have friends who are in this position.
It's such a rare position to be in. >> Yeah.
>> And like to find people who can be grounding on that is very rare, but I feel like having Olivia as a friend has been so grounding for me and like to be able to do like art with her is so cool.
I mean opening for her was so amazing but like to have us open for her is just very full circle and feels wholesome and real.
Yeah, it feels very not not even in a it's so natural to me. >> I agree. I know.
I I feel so lucky to have Chappell in my life.
I mean over the course of years we've known each other.
I think she's helped me so much.
I think this is an insane industry to navigate and like such a such a weird way to to grow up.
And so I think having her as as a resource and like a support system and confidant has been um insanely helpful.
So yeah, and now we have Suki up there so it's like cherry on top.
>> As a fan of both of yours, you know, of your music but also the way that you both move, um you know, you stand on your business, you know, and and I've spoken to you Chappell about that.
Olivia, I've spoken to you about that.
Um you know, I and millions of us have the highest respect for both of you and if and if you encourage each other and support each other to do that then hell yeah.
Hell yeah to that friendship.
Um let's talk let's talk about expectations.
Let's talk about the song um which we all love uh in its original form.
So fun Olivia to be able to reimagine it, bring Chappell into it, do something, get two sides to it, get two different stories and two different takes which obviously informs the video.
So um you know, the the light bulb moment, um when did you realize that you wanted to to to reversion the song and bring your friend into it?
>> When I wrote Expectations initially, it was kind of like a as a challenge to myself.
I wanted to write a mantra song.
I felt got to my songs where I'm like this is how I feel blah blah blah but I wanted it to be like I want to sing this song every night and it's like you know, it's like Kendrick Lamar like sit down be humble.
It's like it it gets in your brain, you know what I mean?
It like I feel like it's a mantra.
And so um when I made this song honestly and I was really inspired by Chappell's Chappell and like the attitude and swagger that she had.
And so um I think I probably played it for you while we were like in the middle of making the record too.
Um and uh it always like felt sort of inspired by you and and your songwriting style.
So, yeah, I was I was so stoked when she when she agreed to be on it.
It was a dream come true.
>> Chappell, how was it to contribute to that and also to add new lyrics and bring your own perspective?
Man, with the ghosting, I can't believe we're back to getting ghosted, Chappell, in this lyric.
I mean, this is [laughter] insane.
>> Well, obviously, I love um making things a little gay.
So, >> [laughter] >> it was fun to just be like girl vibes.
Um But, this is obviously like my first feature I've ever wanted to do, so I It feels like the perfect perfect to me.
Um and it's I don't know.
I feel like it represent a generation of songwriters that like are just really thinking about their lyrics and like I felt like with this song I was like, "Wow, it's so cool that she is putting a pretty difficult concept within like a pop song, which is like my favorite pop songs ever."
But, um I I was like It felt so natural to settle in because I was like, "This is so real."
Like the whole expectations is so valid.
Um but, I was for the the verse about being set up and stuff.
I mean, I was made up, but >> [laughter] >> actually not.
That's what was so funny.
We're like a fantasy like >> want everybody to know nobody ghosted me.
I want the facts out there.
[laughter] >> I Who would dare ghost you?
>> Who would dare Who would dare?
>> When I I dating boys is when I got ghosted. >> Yeah.
>> And I have my favorite memory of being in the studio with you Chappell, and like we were trying to write the second verse and I was just like I was telling you all of like the crazy stuff that boys have done to me and you're like, "Oh my god, like you need to start dating girls. This is crazy."
>> [laughter] >> It's wild. It's wild out here.
>> [laughter] >> It's just It's just like cool to have like a queerness like I don't know.
I don't know if everyone would be down to have like a fully queer verse on air song.
Like I think that that is like says a lot about your support for like She's a queerness but also beside girl pop five odds.
Like that just makes me It feels very feminist to me, but that is like so Olivia.
>> You know Olivia, what you're doing, if I can just take a second to say what you're doing in every step of how you're moving is so inspiring.
Like I I I just like what you did with the festival.
And I pointed this out to somebody that the day they were like, "It's a lot I was like, yes, it's a lot of money, but but you're missing the actual number. The number is 100%."
Not millions of dollars, it's the percentage that is the headline here.
Um you know, a lot of money, but it's but a percentage of an even bigger amount of money is a is a great statement, but 100% is a powerful, really meaningful statement.
And even then I was saying like even down to And Chappell, I know cuz you played it.
You you respect you respect this and love this.
No clashes on the stages.
Really just simple, really effective thinking from a people point of view and an experiential point of view.
And I haven't had a chance to talk to you about this cuz all this was happening after our conversation, but man, you know, you come up a lot in how people should move these days. You really do. So I wanted to say that. >> Aw. Thank you.
>> Aw. Thank you. I mean it was one of the most meaningful experiences of my whole life and um I'm not even just saying this cuz she's on the call, but having um, Chapel be there and perform, as you said, for zero profits, 100% of the profits going to
charity was just um, it was really heartening and it really made me feel really proud to be part of this artistic creative community that like cares about the world and cares about their audience and um, yeah, I uh, I uh, I'm really excited to keep going. I'm like planning next
I'm like planning next year's right now and um, yeah, it's just it's just very meaningful to me.
>> Yeah, well, it's it's meaningful to everybody else as well.
That's really what I just want to make sure you understand that it it really is resonating with the artistic community and with fans.
Like people really respect it.
Um, I started this conversation by by watching I was watching the video.
I was trying to do That was my That was my version of a reaction video.
I'm not very good at that stuff.
But um, >> [laughter] >> it's an amazing watch and I mean, we've got to talk about some of the cameos in here as well.
Um, the most talked about cameo, of course, the biggest cameo in this video is Dan Deacon. I'm joking.
>> [laughter] >> It kind of is Dan Deacon.
It is kind of Dan Deacon because he should be in the studio, but the fact you got him out on the camera is pretty amazing.
But we're going to start with David Byrne because obviously we have to start with the icon and the goat.
Um, someone else you've shared a stage with um, and I feel who's inspired both of you in in in in in your own ways.
I mean, this is somebody who is just art first.
So so cool to see him listening up and having a good time and showing that side that we all know he has.
How was it working with him in the vid? >> It was so cool.
Honestly, I was in shock the whole time.
I I kind of I I asked him to do a cameo and I was a little bit sheepish obviously cuz you know, it's I I always feel shy asking for favors, but he was so down.
He showed up the entire day.
He had a He had a character that he had built out.
He like made this Johnny Johnson character.
There's so many outtakes we have of him just like improvising and riffing and he was so into it and I was like, "Gosh, David, you maybe you know, you should be an actor too one of these days.
He's very multi-talented."
>> In a way, don't you think he kind of is?
Like if I think about Stop Making Sense, that movie, you know, he is so walking the line between the reality of the music and the inspiration of what he's trying to say, but also this character and this whole artistic space he exudes. It's pure art.
It's but but never from a sort of I never feel on the outside of him, like I don't fit in.
Like I feel like I still can be a fan of his.
>> He do- he does it so brilliantly where it never feels like it's a costume.
It just sort of feels like an extension of him in kind of more of an absurd way, but I love him so much.
I love Stop Making Sense and he's also just a such a wonderful guy.
I've gotten a chance to like hang out with him and talk to him and he's just absolutely brilliant and very kind.
So >> Speaking of extensions, and this is where I step out on the edge of a cliff and have to tread very carefully, but I have good friends of mine who would know these sort of things that Chapel, you may have dug into the wig factory into your into your prized wig cabinet for this particular video. Is that true? Is that true? [laughter] >> Yes.
>> Yeah, I mean I mean there's a lot the line that my friend sitting on the floor here sent me was another impeccable wig from Chapel.
>> [laughter] >> I know, I'm very into wigs and this video um let me explore that path.
>> You know, for you who's who's obviously, you know, doing the show at the festival and you've been around in a really beautiful way and you know, you're showing up for the right things like you did the other night.
Um but you haven't been really active.
Fair to say, you're not on yet.
And so going back on a video set and and even with your friend and being part of something fun, how did it feel changing gears and being Chapel Roan in that regard again because it's it's so clearly you in that space.
You've got your superhero outfit on, you know? >> Oh, yeah, for sure.
Um I felt I was like, oh, deep thoughts on this one.
Like >> [laughter] >> I felt really good.
I mean, I always love dressing up in like costumes and all.
I have been very much off the sauce gear like I have a Louis Vuitton since like the subway last year. So >> Yeah.
>> Um it felt I was surprised how easily I just like settled into off summer.
I was like, oh yeah, I'm going to be in England for 5 hours and that's normal and I will be fine.
Like Like I I was fully, you know.
But it just makes me so appreciative that like I get to I get to deep in it for like And so like just make songs that are about like we just get to bounce around on stage in the hot little outfits and sing about love.
Like that is like our vibe and I just like I it just makes me so it makes me excited to get back into it, which like >> Yeah.
>> You know, we're we're getting but it's like this was a good little fresh refresher to be like Yes, I actually am good at this and I can do this. Don't forget that.
>> I sorry, I feel like Daisy Chain was your first performance up, right?
In like a year or something like that?
Like a real >> I did Lollapalooza and Lollapalooza something there a previous year, but And I'm also like doing the Super Bowl rapid um stuff that big too. So like It's all good.
>> keep the lights on Olivia. Do you know what I mean?
I can take all the time off if I want, but we've GOT TO KEEP A LITTLE LOLLAPALOOZA HERE and a little Lollapalooza there just keeps the just keeps things turning, you know.
>> I just I just I remember watching your Daisy Chain and being like I can't believe she's not on tour right now because this is the most buttoned up incredible set I've ever seen and it looks like you just like >> Yeah, yeah.
>> you've been doing this for months and I was I was just really impressed.
>> I think the space that you took to go and and figure out what you want to say next and not just keep it moving.
I think whether you meant to or not is a very inspiring decision.
Um for artists that that that will others will come and be in the situation you're in where it's really fast.
Like you Olivia, like you Chappell, they will.
We we're seeing them now.
I mean, there are people going through that.
And I think they have to know that no is available. Right? It is available.
>> No is your best friend. That's what I learned. No is your best friend.
And that's why like saying yes to expectations always like yes, that's good. Right? Like this feels fun. This feels inspiring. >> Yeah.
>> Like for me and like I feel like people are going to like it.
>> [laughter] >> And safe cuz the friendship too.
Not for me to say, but you know, the fact you can go out on set and be with your buddy and it can be fun and it's not just the Chappell Roan show.
It's not I don't think it should it'll be lost on anybody either that the support continues even through the most fun of experiences, you know. >> Yeah.
It was nice to take a a step back and be like, yes.
This is so fun like the video. Like peace out. Like I wouldn't be home. >> get to go home. Exactly. You're the Exactly.
You're the aunt or the uncle in this situation where you get to give the baby back to Olivia and be like, I'm out of here.
>> [laughter] >> Have a Have a Have a good Have a good time with this with this this train you're on.
You know, Olivia, you seem really well.
Boston on the 15th, the tour looks like a total triumph. I can't wait to see it. >> Oh, yeah.
>> Chappell, we're not we're not here yet for you, but we are when you are back and you know, whenever you're ready, we're ready.
Um, but that's that's the limit of it.
And uh, this is a beautiful way um, you know, to create something that we're going to have forever now this song, the two of you, this friendship on record.
So, once again, Olivia, perfection and uh, Chappell was so good to see you.
What a real treat this has been.
I really enjoyed the last 15 minutes. Thanks, you two. >> Aw, thanks, Ann. Love you. See you later. >> guys. Take care. Bye. >> Mhm.
