Lisa: I'm trying to be cool with it. You know?
Lisa: I'm trying to be cool with it. You know?
It's like, it's whatever. It's not that spicy. Ah.
Sean: Hey, what's going on, everybody?
For <i>First We Feast</i>, I'm Sean Evans, and you're watching <i>Hot Ones</i>.
It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.
And today we're joined by Lisa.
She's a record shattering global pop star who you can catch making her acting debut in season 3 of "<i>The White Lotus</i>", set to release on Max, February 16th.
And she also has a brand new album on the way, as well.
It's called "<i>Alter Ego</i>", and it's slated to arrive on February 28th.
We're all very excited for that.
Lisa, welcome to the show. Lisa: Thank you. Hi. Hi. Sean: Hey. How's it going? Lisa: It's good. Lisa: I'm super nervous.
Sean: What is going through your head as you prepare to take on the gauntlet?
Are you someone who enjoys spicy food?
Lisa: I'm not really a big fan of spicy food, but I, I love, I just, I just love, like, you know, Thai, Thai food is a little spicy, but not crazy spicy.
So, I'm Thai, and, uh, I want my people to be proud.
Well, I did some homework.
I asked my friend, my teammate, Rosie. Sean: Last season. She was on the show. Lisa: Yes.
And she was like: "It's really spicy." .
She told me to take, um, ice cream.
Sean: I do remember she said that the ice cream wasn't ice creaming enough for her.
I do remember her saying that. Lisa: What is that mean? Sean: Yeah. Oh. Okay. Mhm Mm. Lisa: It's yummy. It's good. Lisa: Whew. Okay, okay. I think I can take this. It's good. Sean: You got it. Lisa: Yeah.
Sean: So, "<i>Alter Ego</i>" is an album.
The concept, it's inspired by these five different personas that you have, which all have their own names and character traits.
I'm curious, how does stepping into a character serve as like a superpower for you as an artist or performer?
Lisa: It just came up like, oh, why not we just have, like, a fun concept as an alter ego and just set a five character. There's, um. Roxi.
Roxi, Kiki, Sunni, Speedi and Vixi.
And it just represents like five characters of me, as well.
Like, I feel related with them, as well.
It feels like I can express myself in a different version of me. And it's fun.
So, I feel like I can't wait for my fan to listen to this album, to really enjoy this album and see a different side of Lisa. Lisa: Ooh! Lisa: Hmm. Hmmm. Lisa: Hmm! Lisa: Wait. Sean: Yeah.
Lisa: They said is "Green Thai Vibes".
Sean: Are you catching the green Thai vibes over here? Lisa: Yes. Lisa: A little bit. There's green curry. Sean: Yeah. Lisa: Mhm. I can feel it. Sean: There we go.
Sean: So, congratulations on being cast for season 3 of "<i>The White Lotus</i>".
One of the best shows on television, in my opinion.
Did you have a proudest day on set?
Lisa: I think the proudest day of me on set was the day that I shot the, the welcoming scene.
It's like, you know, it's iconic.
It's like: "Welcome to the White Lotus in Thailand, kha." . It's like... I got to say that line.
It's like, can you imagine?
Are you a big fan of "<i>The White Lotus</i>"? Sean: I love the show.
I'm very excited for season 3.
It's one of my favorite shows on TV.
And when I see that opening scene inviting them to the resort, I'll be like: "Proudest day on set." . Lisa: The proudest day. That's right. Is this your brand?
Sean: Yeah, actually, that's a good eye. Lisa: Aaah. Sean: Yeah, it is.
Sean: So this is a garlic pickled Sriracha, that we just launched, actually. But, you can be honest. Lisa: It's really good. Lisa: It's really good. Sean: We'll take that. Lisa: Wow.
Lisa: I need this in my house. Sean: That's all right.
We're gonna pack them up, give them to you to go. Lisa: No, no, no. Lisa: I'll buy it. I'll support you.
Like, where, where can I get this guy? Sean: Listen, Lisa.
After what I'm gonna put you through, later on, like, please, please take the gifts. Okay? Lisa: Okay. Yay!
Lisa: But, I'm good with "Da' Bomb", though. Sean: Yeah, yeah. Okay.
Rosie gave you good notes.
So, "<i>New Woman</i>" with Rosalía, total smacker, and I've heard so many interesting stories about working with Max Martin over the years, from interviews that I've done with NSYNC, and Ariana Grande.
What stands out to you about the experience of collaborating with Max Martin?
Lisa: Like, we, I mean, he's, he's incredible. He's amazing.
I was really lucky to, to work with him, to work with such an amazing producer.
Um, but with Rosalía, you know, it's just like... I love her music. I love her performance.
I saw her, the first time, at Coachella.
I was like, I was, my jaw was like... Wow.
This woman, she's like, she's so talented.
I got this song and there's a beat change on the second verse, and I was like, this is gonna be so good, if Rosalía can join. And she said yes. I'm like...
It's too good to be true. You know? It's like...
and you know, just our culture together, combined is like, it turned out so, so incredible.
I have to make my people proud. Hm. Hmm. Sean: Yeah. Lisa: Mmm. Okay. Mmm. Okay.
Sean: I love the expressions. Lisa: It's really good. Sean: Mhm.
And it does kind of have a late kick on it.
That, maybe, is shining through here. Lisa: Okay Sean: Yeah. Lisa: Okay.
Sean: This is where I kind of, this is where it, kind of, kicks for me. Lisa: Really? Sean: Yeah. Yeah.
Lisa: It's too early for you. No? Sean: I know. Yeah. You're right.
Sean: Put a lot of miles...
Lisa: This is too early for you. Sean: ... over the years.
Sean: I'm, I'm gonna be holding your hand through this whole thing. All right, Lisa? Lisa: Okay. Okay.
Sean: On a technical level, is there anything different about rapping in English versus rapping in Korean? Lisa: Oh...
Lisa: It's like, it's really, it's really different.
Um, the pronunciation is, for me, to pronounce, sometimes, something in English I can't do, like, I can't do v. You know? It's like... v, v. Sean: Yeah, yeah. Lisa: It's...
we don't have that in Thai.
And for Korean it's like... s, sa, sa...
like, it's <i>saranghae</i> <i>(I love you)</i>, like that's, that's, um...
pronunciation is really hard for me, to pronounce when I, when I rap.
So, I have, I have to take, like, I don't know, a few hours for me to finish, uh, one verse in Korean. Yeah. It's intense.
Sean: But, you know what?
You're someone who sticks with it just like you are today.
And, believe it or not, we are halfway through... Lisa: No way. Sean: ...
the <i>Hot Ones</i> line up. Lisa: No way.
Sean: The people of Thailand are very proud, Lisa. Lisa: Oh. Thank you. Oh.
Sean: So, this next one is called "Los Calientes", here in the five spot. Lisa: It's good. It's good.
Sean: And you're halfway through.
Remember how nervous you were when you walked in? Lisa: I know. I know.
Sean: And look at you now. Lisa: Huh!
Lisa: I'm so proud of myself. Sean: No problem. Crushing it, Lisa.
Sean: If a bald man, like myself, were to incorporate one Korean beauty tip into their skincare routine, what would you recommend for someone like me?
Lisa: But, I mean, your skin is, is glowy. Sean: Whoa.
Lisa: It's, it's really healthy. It's, like, dewy. It's, like, wow. Your skin is so good.
I don't know, but I would recommend you to use a mask that I always have it in my luggage, when I travel. Sean: Mm.
Lisa: It's really help your skin, if you have, like, a dry, or breakouts, or anything, they just, like...
Sean: Well, you know what?
If you have an extra one, I'll take it.
When Rosé was on the show, she brought me a squishy stress ball. Lisa: Ooh! Sean: That she uses. You know?
And I still have it, to this day.
Lisa: Oh, that was when she had "Da' Bomb". Sean: Yeah. Yeah. Lisa: Do I need that? Sean: Yeah. Oo-oh.
Sean: I didn't bring the...
Lisa: Can I, can I borrow yours?
Sean: I didn't bring the squishy to LA.
You've got no safety net on this one, Lisa. Lisa: Oh, no.
Sean: You're riding alone. Lisa: Oh, okay. Oh, my God. Ah. Mm. Sean: Dancin' on it. Lisa: Yeah. I'm feeling it. It's good. It's so good. Sean: Look at you, Lisa.
Lisa: No, but my favorite is...
Sean: Pickled garlic Sriracha. I know.
Lisa: Sriracha is really good. Sean: We got you. So...
Lisa: I can feel somethings, like, oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm good, I'm good, I'm good, I'm good. Good to go, good to go.
Sean: Is someone who's achieved elusive global star status, I'm curious, is media different throughout the world?
Like, how might a press tour in America be different than, say, one in Japan?
Lisa: I think, for me, the big difference is language.
'Cause English is not my first language.
So, it's challenging for me to answer or do an interview in English. Sean: Yeah.
But, you know, what's amazing about you is, you know, you speak English, you speak Thai, you speak Korean. Lisa: Korean, yes.
Sean: You're conversational in Japanese, conversational in Chinese.
I've heard you rattle off French before.
Do you have any foundational advice for someone who's trying to pick up a new language? Like, how do you do it? Lisa: I don't know.
You just have to keep talking to people in that language.
I think I feel like I'm more, I feel more confident in English more, than two years ago.
So, yeah, I think it's just...
Sean: So, imagine you two years from now. Yeah. Lisa: Right?
I could be like, you know, like a local. You never know. Lisa: Wooh! Okay. Sean: Diving in. Love it. Lisa: That's a big bite. Sean: Mhm. This is a step. Yeah. Lisa: Mhm. Sean: Mhm. It has... Lisa: Oh, oh, oh. Sean: Yeah. Right. Lisa: Yes, yes, yes.
Lisa: It's coming, it's coming. Sean: Mhm. And it has that kinda... Lisa: It's knocking. It's knocking now. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Lisa: Mhm. Sean: Yeah.
It has, almost, like a gardeny kind of freshness.
Like a salad, kind of, up front, and then smoke in the back. Yeah. Lisa: Hmm. Yeah. Oh I need, um... I'm sweating. Sean: Take it. Lisa: I'm just sweating. I'm just sweating. Sean: Yeah.
Whatever you're going through... Lisa: Just sweating. Sean: ... it's all okay.
Make no apologies on this show. Lisa: Okay. Okay. Okay.
Sean: So, you have a reputation as one of the best dancers in the pop game.
Going viral for your dance practices long before you ever even made a debut.
Is there a music video or performance, that stands out in your mind, as being, like, the most challenging choreography to master?
Lisa: The most like, crazy thing that I did last year for "<i>Rockstar</i>", for the music video, I just had, like, a lesson, like a one hour lesson before I go get my, my makeup and hair, and then I go on set right away and do that choreo. Sean: Yeah.
Lisa: That was, like, too intense for me.
Sean: And you shot that music video in Bangkok? Lisa: Yeah.
Sean: It's, like, another love letter to your home country of Thailand.
Lisa: I didn't, I didn't think about that way before, but, because of "<i>The White Lotus</i>", I happen to be in, in, uh, in Thailand, and it's just like: "Oh why not, we just shot, we just shoot this music video in Thailand?"
, and they come up with the craziest location.
It's a Chinatown in Thailand, which is like the most crazy, so much traffic around there. We went at 3:30 a. m. , there's no one.
So, it's come out like a movie or something. It's so cool.
Sean: This is "Da' Bomb Beyond Insanity". Lisa: Okay.
I'll show Rosie that I'm not gonna cry. I will not cry. I'll prove her wrong. Sean: All right, cool.
Well, you're saying it before you take a... Lisa: Oh, my God. Am I being too... Sean: ... bite. Lisa: ... like... Sean: No, I love it. I love it. Be confident. Be confident.
Lisa: Oh, I don't wanna cry after this one. Okay. Lisa: Wow. Whew.
Lisa: I'm, I'm acting right now.
I'm trying to be cool with it. You know?
It's like, it's whatever. It's not that spicy. Wait. You know what?
I have a trick that's a little too crazy, but it's really helped when I had something, like, too spicy. I have to take my, um...
(<i>speaks in Thai</i>) ... saliva out. Sean: Okay. Yeah.
Lisa: And then I can be like... it's nothing happened. Sean: Yeah.
Like a blood transfusion, but for your mouth.
Lisa: I want to do it now, but I know it's gonna be so bad on the camera.
Uh, I should keep my, uh, my image nice.
Sean: It's hard to keep that on this show.
If you were putting together the ultimate Lalisa Thai street food tour, what would be some essential dishes that I'd have to try? Lisa: Ooh. Um.
My favorite, uh, Thai street food... Um. It calls, um... <i>yum ma muang</i>. Sean: Mmm.
Lisa: It's like a green mango...
do, like, a papaya and mix it with the sauce. It's really good.
Do you like, uh, mango sticky rice?
Sean: Yeah I love mango sticky rice.
Lisa: Mango sticky rice is good, too. Um, actually, what else? I'm trying to think. Oh, my God. Mm. That's all. Oh. <i>Boat noodle</i>.
The soup is, like, brown. That's really good, too. Oh. Ha. Ha. Okay, okay. I think I'm ready. I'm not ready.
Sean: To move on to the next one?
Lisa: Kinda ready, but not ready, but yeah. Sean: That's the show. Lisa: Let's do it. Sean: Let's do it. Lisa: Let's do it. Sean: Let's do it. Lisa: You know what? Yeah, let's do it.
Sean: So, this next one is the "Sicilian Scorpion". Lisa: It's crazier? Huh. Okay. Wow. It doesn't go away. Lisa: Oh. Sean: Right. Not fun. Lisa: Huh. Sean: Yeah. Lisa: It tastes like... sour. No? Sean: Yeah. You know what?
Lisa: Like, is my tongue, when...
Sean: I think your tongue, your taste buds, they're all fried and they're all scrambled. You know?
At this point in the show. Lisa: Oh, yeah. Okay. It's good.
Sean: Which is a more overwhelming sporting experience?
Waving the flag at an <i>F1</i> race or going out for the coin toss... Lisa: Oh, my God. Sean: ...
at a career shape football match? Lisa: The toin, uh... the, the toin? The coin toss.
I mean, I was really awkward, like, I don't really know what to do.
It's like, they said: "Oh, just walk in." .
I'm like: "Walk, uh, straight or like..." . Like, how should I walk? Or, like, should I run?
They look like they have to, like, you know, be on time. Da, da, da, da, da.
I was like, okay, I walk, but it's like: "Oh, should I walk faster?" .
Or should I just be like, like a model walk? Like, I don't even know.
I was so, like, confusing.
But, yeah, I gave the, the coins and got back, and I just walked back.
I was like: "Oh, that's it. So simple." . Lisa: Just walk.
Sean: You made it look good. All right, Lisa.
Lisa: Is that the last one?
Sean: You don't have to, if you don't want to. Lisa: Yeah. Why not? Challenged myself. I love pushing myself.
Sean: That's what I'm saying.
Lisa: I love pushing myself. Okay.
But, this is not opened, yet. Can I... Sean: Yeah. You know what?
Lisa: Can I, can I borrow yours?
Sean: Mine's already open.
Lisa: Can I borrow yours? Sean: This will be easy. Lisa: Thank you so much.
Sean: You got the fresh manicure. Don't smell it first. Lisa: Whoa.
Sean: Just don't smell it. Don't smell it. Don't smell it. Lisa: Huh, okay.
Lisa: I think I need, um, uh, ice cream. Sean: Oh. Well, you know what? Lisa: But, but, no.
But, let's not ask for it now. Right? Sean: All right. Fine. Oh, look at you. You're pushing yourself.
It's ready for you, whenever you need it. But, I love this. Lisa: Okay. I'm ready. Sean: Here we go, Lisa. To you. What a run.
Lisa: I'm gonna, uh, teach you, like, um, cheers, in Thai.
We say, um, we have two versions.
There's a <i>chon kaew</i>.
Sean: <i>Chon kaew</i> Lisa: Means, like, cheers. Sean: I love that.
Lisa: But, bottoms up, we said <i>mot kaeo</i>. Sean: <i>Mot kaeo</i>. Lisa: Yeah. What do you want?
What do you prefer, <i>chon kaew</i> or <i>mot kaeo</i>?
Sean: I kinda like <i>chon kaew</i>. Lisa: Okay. Sean: Ready? Sean: <i>Chon kaew</i>. Lisa: <i>Chon kaew</i>. Whoa. Wait, wait, wait, wait. It's really good. What? Wait, wait. It's not. It's not... Sean: Yeah. Lisa: It's not coming.
Sean: It does build on you a little bit, but it is nice up front. And look at you, Lisa. Dancing on it.
Conquered the wings of death. Lisa: Woohoo!
Sean: And just one more thing before we get you out of here. Lisa: Mhm.
Sean: 'Cause I know that, as a creative outlet, in addition to acting, in addition to music, you'll sometimes like to sketch or draw cats. Lisa: Oh, yeah. Sean: You know?
Lisa: It's so bad, though. I'm so bad at that.
Sean: Well, you know what?
So bad, that it's great in this moment, because we had Rosé do a wing ten sketch, and Doja Cat do a wing ten sketch.
So, if you'll humor me, and I get that this is a lot under the circumstances, if you would give us a sketch that we could put in the Museum of Curiosities. Lisa: Museum? Sean: Yeah.
Right alongside Rosé and Doja Cat. Lisa: Oh, my God. Really? Alongside Doja Cat? Okay. Do you have pets?
Sean: No, but I kind of have a puppy fever thing going on, right now. Lisa: Aaaaw. Sean: Yeah.
Lisa: You should adopt one. Sean: I know. I know. But, you know, I say...
Lisa: They deserve to have home.
Sean: You're right about that.
And you've got, what, five cats, four cats and a dog?
Lisa: Five cats and one dog.
Sean: Five cats and a dog. Lisa: Mhm, mhm. I have a dobermann. Sean: Named Love. Right? Lisa: Love. Sean: Yeah. Lisa: Yes. Lisa: He's so sweet. He's the sweetest. Lisa: Okay. Wow.
I'm gonna sign for you as well just in case you want my... Sean: Lucky me.
Sean: Go ahead and hold it up. There it is. A cat. Lisa: A cat.
Sean: Hang it up in the Louvre. And thank you, Lisa.
Coming in here, rocking the wings of death.
And now there's nothing left to do, but roll out the red carpet for you. Lisa: This is nothing.
Sean: This camera, this camera, or this camera.
Let the people know what you have going on in your life. Lisa: Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for this experience.
Like, I really appreciate it. And, can I take this... Sean: Yeah. Lisa: This home? Sean: All yours.
Lisa: "<i>The White Lotus</i>", my first acting debut is on air now, so please check it out.
And, also, my new album, "<i>Alter Ego</i>", is coming out on the 28th February.
So, please check it out, and I hope you guys liked it. Okay, guys. It's your turn. You have... please. Can, can... Sean: Yes. Of course.
Lisa: Can I have, they try?
Sean: Come hang out on set, this is not uncommon. Lisa: Oh, my God.
Sean: This is not uncommon at all. Lisa: Oh, my God!
Sean: But you did so good. Lisa: Thank you so much.
Oh, I'm so proud of myself. I'm so proud.
