meantime Jaylen Brown welcome to the show thanks for having me what's going through your head as you prepare to take on the hot ones Gauntlet I know it's been a long time in the making well I got a lot of people rooting on my failure um but I feel like I'm the spicy
one in my family so um I'm going to see what I got [Music] all [Music] right all right not bad I got a little flavor to it so I want to congratulate you on what I'm sure has been a joyous offseason you know bringing another title back to the Boston Celtics and then in a Finals MVP
to boot now that the target is fully on your back and the Celtics go from A Team hunting a title to now the ones being hunted is there a difference in your mindset going into this next season I think so yeah I think the the pressure and an expectation level needs to be
raised I think uh right now human nature kind of seeks in once you win and makes you kind of relax complacent complacency yeah so we got to fight that and at the celebratory parade you wore a state your Source shirt you know as a check to Stephen A Smith speculating on your
marketability how do you think your relationship with media narratives has evolved over the course of your career I don't really do too many podcasts too much talking interviews I rarely do them so uh kind of some of the narratives kind of float and I allow them to float
but you know I'm going forward I look forward to like clearing up some misconceptions and uh addressing some things in the past so know maybe me and Stephen A have a sit down as some point and uh you know hash things [Music] out that one was better than the last
one do you have a favorite coach Missoula ISM you know he really has kind of cemented himself as one of the unique Minds in the NBA one of Coach missoula's favorite quotes is like there's no such thing as a foul either you die or you don't he just has a bunch of like crazy
quotes and mentality like we uh one of the things he's coined is like you know um we call like uh our offense um like the killer well offense and we attack seals cuz killer Wells like how they hunt seals and we together and we studi like how killer Wells attack as a unit
and then we've built our offense kind of like off of like killer Wells so Joe's definitely has like a bunch of crazy stuff but like it's a method to his Madness and it obviously it [Music] works see [Music] okay got some flavor to it I saw a lecture that you gave on panopticism you
know at your Alma Moder UC Berkeley do you have a favorite philosopher or philosophical theory that you find most thought-provoking a favorite philosopher these are great questions by the way Socrates he studied at the Library of Alexandria actually got to go there this
summer I spent a lot of time I went to Alexandria this summer which is not the same as the library of Alexander Alexandria which was uh burned down by Julius Caesar but it still has a lot of historical monuments and documents that still exist so it was cool getting to go
spend some time there this summer but um it's a lot of great philosophers mine might be like Tupac or something I don't know but uh you know Socrates is are going are you ready to move on here to win number four let's go all right so up next Los Cente ver do you do this like challenge like
as well every time or does they give you like a fake set of wings or something that you just I'm happy at any point to swap paddles all right Jaylen I'm a chickenwing talk show host of the highest dignity all right every single time every single time you know I run
this that's respectable though you get an award or something for that you know like athletes I'm chasing my own Milestones you know what I'm saying I'm going to get you some type of trophy we're going to figure that out if complex doesn't get it done for you I know I'll get it done for you all right
than I know come through yes sir so I read that you were taking a robotics class at MIT when you heard the news that you'd secured the largest contract in NBA history are you optimistic about the future of AI and machine learning or do you fear an inevitable robot uprising
I'm on the optimistic side you know uh I I think technology is a great way to make um the world more efficient I definitely think I think ethics should be something that should be maintained as like um technology advances because there's no governance as we continue to
make new things you technology is dope I'm super into it and uh I can't wait to be able to give it to communities that can benefit the most from it as an athlete what do you see as the pros and cons of Advanced stats analytics and like the way that data is shaping so much of the landscape in professional
sports these days being able to cross over between sports technology analytics data um definitely leads to good results I'm I'm a big believer in like the ey test I'm a big believer in just a fi like I'm a I'm a big field guy like I trust the numbers but like if a guy is
hot or if a guys you got to going like the numbers and the the the system it don't matter like you got to feed the high hand so you know it's it's just a balance and some people have better feels than others and you know in tennis they have that Hawkeye review system
Major League Baseball they've experimented with like an automated balls and strike system would you invite like an AI system that could maybe like make the call between a block and a charge on the court ah that would be tough I don't I don't know I don't know how that would go over but uh I'm open
to exploring that you know the NBA is definitely you know pushing just having all the different type of wearables and stuff CU there's so much economic value in collecting data for an organization um for or a league or for an individual so um it's it's important for our
players to want to protect our data but also you know if we feel comfortable enough licens it so we can help further and grow the game halfway this is five mhm mhm we good I don't know son as a history buff is there a figure in the league that you think is the most
culturally impactful or globally influential like who stands out in your mind as like the NBA's most significant historical figure sheesh it's a it's a few and for different categories um of course you would go like Mich Michael Jordan for his marketability and how he
globalize the game especially during that Olympic time frame but you can also say from a cultural standpoint like Alan Iverson um and just him integrating like culture which is so influential between music sport art fashion um and how he represented like that you know the
urbanness of basketball Kobe Bryant and his mentality and how that translated from generation to generation is going to continue to translate Steph Curry influence on his generation you see how the game is played now it's all threes um so it's hard to choose
one um but who would who would yours be o that's a good question Bill Russell I was about to say that's mine oh really for sure did we just become best friends I think we just became best friends not just in sports being the most winous player but how he seen his influence Beyond an athlete or an
Entertainer a lot of the guys just want to keep keep it you know Sports and basketball but I I think you know our our value our influence goes beyond it depends on if we want to use it or not that's [Music] it this is number six this is the [Music] one okay who are the ones that stopped
F6 not a single athlete you know like I got a bunch of doubters some are in this room some some haters they think like cuz I do the spicy food and they be like you're not going to make it through hot Ones been on going thing you'll have the last laugh here yeah for sure but I felt I a
little had a little something little something yeah do you feel any sense of validation you know being so ahead of the short shorts Trend that's now back in style in the NBA because I understand that you were on that wave since like for junior high yeah you know when I was
in high school I definitely wanted to stand out a little different a little more and I started like folding my shorts up people give me credit for it but it's also a lot of guys who was doing that as well at the time when I was doing it I was probably at the most
clout or whatever but you know fast forward it's become you know a more of a common thing you know so I always encourage people to do what makes them feel the most expressive um and you know we're born to kind of stand out so don't be afraid to be unique don't be afraid
to be yourself and don't be afraid to think for yourself that's most importantly Wing number seven that's my favorite number what's your favorite number five it was a former Cal alumni at War number five maybe you would know trivia question right here noal alumnium NBA chant Jason kid there
you go there we go [Music] woo think I felt that one yeah this is a different level and this one's immediate yeah yeah I might have to shake that one out a little bit I feel that one yeah when you think about your transition you know from Cal to the
Boston Celtics do you remember your first like welcome to the NBA moment yeah when that first check hit your bank account welcome that was my welcome uh cuz like I told them to mail it to me so I could just feel it and touch it like I wanted to see my first check like I wanted to
feel it in my hand the first check that I got was like 180 82,000 or something like that and I was like I remember seeing that as a a 18-year-old coming from a single parent household coming from and I like I just see 180,000 just hit and the first check I was like all
right welcome to the NBA do you have an all-time favorite buzzer beater from your career definitely in the finals game three um like uh we were in Dallas we were up to well um and uh they were storming back like the Mavericks they got hot Kyrie start going crazy like 1
minute left you know I feel I hit a shot that kind of halted their momentum and that kind of helped us carry out and get the win that was this year and I think that helped us ultimately get the [Music] championship this is number eight why you don't start doing that you know I got trusty
I'm [Music] mhm that was what a whole different level over here yeah that one was the one that one was the one right there no I take satisfied peanut gallery over here yeah they're liking this n yeah that one my [Music] senses you know yeah yeah we got to shake that one out that was a good
one I just H I'm now I'm going to hiccup by the way the way you seem to have a unique take on scouting I know I know my lips it's my lip you me both same page feeling my lips now in breaking down game film what does it mean to study a player's Rhythm and is there a player
that has the most unique flow on tape yeah being an elite Defender you got to study gu's Rhythm it's a rhythm and a Cadence to some howow people play so like if you if you see like certain guys they play to a certain beat to a certain Cadence they play a certain Style
and if you know their style you can time what they're going to do next because you know the Rhythm and the the BPM that they kind of play at Luca has a unique Rhythm it's almost so slow that it's hard to time Kyrie has a unique Rhythm as well very one of one so his moves and
how his Cadence is is is sometimes it's very very hard to time like he has a lot of counter moves like he he can go and pivot off both feet he can shoot with both hands he can drive both directions which makes his rhythm a lot harder to track some guys only go right some guys
only go left some guys have two moves that they go to so I look at you know basketball as like poetry em motion is which is music and everybody is playing their own song you know and everybody samples from different artists and they playing their own song and if you want
to stop them you got to you got to you got to study their Rhythm you got to learn when their beat is about to drop scorpion that's my Zodiac all right [Music] woo yes sir mhm all [Music] right that crazy yeah I see why they call it Scorpio mhm oh that one that one sweat GL
yeah opening up here that was good so I know that you have a love of Chess that traces all the way back to your youth as Captain of your middle school chess team do you have a favorite opening or a most satisfying chess win I was a big Gambit guy those you know you this somebody get the AC or
something you're a pro there not no sweat coming down I have I put my hours in the gym that's the thing Jaylen am allow to drink water or no go ahead go ahead no no is that like absolutely you know we have a dry run that we've been going on so far like that there's a reason this
stuff is here you know but like the the contestant not even take a sip oh we're in the competitive athlete mindset right now I get it I get it I want to know cuz I'm sweating over here I know we get it but we're so close to the end let's just see if we can get
there I think one of the best things about my life is that I learned the game of chess depending on what Gambit what trap or what style of play you're thinking about the end in the beginning and in life I like to encourage more to do the same like think about the
beginning and the end like what is your mission what is your purpose what do you want your legacy to be and you start to play the game based upon how you want to finish it all right Jaylen we're about to finish this game my nose is running and stuff I got to like
about that's a good dab right that's a great dab texbook did that on camera textbook so y'all know I'm not thinking the funk cheers Jaylen what a run we got to do a wing cheers ah let's go n you're a legend before we before we do this last thing I just got to give you your flowers been watching
your interviews for a long time and you are one of the the most creative you do your research you ask some of the most organic questions so I just got to give you your flowers cuz nowadays in the media is very lazy people ask the same questions try to create the same
headlines it's all about controversy and you do it in a positive way and you at the same time have fun with it it and uh you asked great questions so I got to get you your flowers man that's why I wanted to come on the show so cheers to you and back at you jayen I remember
when we met a long long time ago you were probably second or third year in the league was it in this building it was it it was actually before this building it was in a completely different office actually like over on 52nd somebody yeah second or third year in the league and hot ones was not a big
hit yet and I remember someone coming up to me and they were like hey there's an NBA player named Jaylen Brown who'd like to meet you and we took a picture in front of the uh OG hot one sign it's amazing we got to find that picture it's been amazing to watch the way uh both
hot ones and Jaylen you kind of went like this together and here we are full circle right now two Champions it's a beautiful thing two Champions Cheers [Music] Cheers woo I know but the wings of death are being behind us you've conquered you've postered dunked on the hot ones Gauntlet
and to close things out with the NBA season just a few weeks away what I want to do are some way too early predictions for the 2024 25 campaign all right and we'll begin with this one name a team that was mid or didn't make the playoffs last year that you think will take the
biggest step forward this year Memphis give us a star that you most want to see in the dunk contest uh Zion and then finally the Boston Celtics will win back-to- back NBA Finals if you stay healthy and there it is Jaylen Brown taking on the wings of death
