Eric Andre Enters a Fugue State While Eating Spicy Wings | Hot Ones

0:00

This show sucks, man.

0:03

I love you, but this is brutal.

0:14

Hey, what's going on, everybody?

0:14

For First We Feast, I'm Sean Evans, and you're watching Hot Ones.

0:17

It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.

0:20

And today, we welcome back comedian Eric Andre.

0:22

His first-ever stand-up special, Legalize Everything, is available now.

0:26

Keep an eye out as well for his hidden-camera comedy, Bad Trip, which is likewise set to release on Netflix.

0:31

And of course, The Eric Andre Show season 5 on Adult Swim later this year.

0:35

Eric Andre, welcome back to the show.

0:39

Thank you for having me back.

0:39

May we have a may I have a may I have a Out of curiosity, has your relationship with hot sauce changed at all since you did Hot Ones like 4 years ago? I feel braver now.

0:50

Having gone through that, it was like a rite of passage.

0:53

I never had anything that hot in my life, nor have I had anything that hot ever since, but it made me feel like, "Okay, it's it's very hard, but it's it's possible."

1:04

You know, I didn't understand at the time the weight of that day and that moment.

1:08

It's kind of like followed me around even to this day.

1:10

People will scream at me on the street, "Tinashe, where you at?"

1:14

How's it been like for you? Amazing.

1:18

Well, Tinashe and I are now officially married, and we're having our we're having a baby girl this August. Um it's been cool.

1:25

I didn't realize how popular your show was until I did it. People love it. I'm so I'm so ready. Oh my god, that's hot. That's not not hot.

1:54

If that's one Uh, by like four, I'm to be [ __ ] Holy [ __ ] So, I want to start by talking to you about your special legalize everything, which is getting a lot of positive press for nailing the zeitgeist with a lot of bits, even though it was taped pre-pandemic.

2:15

Did having a tape special on deck during quarantine feel like a superpower as a comedian, like you had an ace in the hole? Oh my god, 100%.

2:22

Thank god I didn't tour this year, film it this year, like schedule to film it this year.

2:30

Totally lucked out, blind luck.

2:32

I did not predict the coronavirus. It's good though. It's hot, but it's good.

2:37

How important is a stand-up's hype music, and why did you choose Big Freedia's Third Ward Bounce for this one? I filmed in New Orleans.

2:44

So, I wanted a New Orleans artist.

2:48

And Big Freedia's music is just so bombastic and powerful and cinematic.

2:54

I'm such a big Freedia fan.

2:54

We had her on Eric Andre show this upcoming season, so uh it was a no-brainer. Do I continue eating?

3:01

Do I just go on Do I move on myself, or do you queue me?

3:06

You know, we're we're walking down this road together, but now is the time to move on to the second wing, which is the Steel City Jay Jaguar. How do I fan you now?

3:28

That's a bad idea, right?

3:29

It's a that's a lot of sauce. Eric.

3:34

After my Hot Ones last time, I [ __ ] molten lava for like 2 days.

3:39

I'll eagerly await the update this time. Uh-huh.

3:43

I'll I'll I'll email you from my Toto toilet.

3:46

So, in 2019, your clown alter ego Blarf released his debut album Cease and Desist, which features an interlude from that famous Roll Model interview between Katie Couric and Lil Wayne.

3:56

I don't know what you're talking about, man.

3:57

I have nothing to do with that guy.

3:59

I don't know who that guy is.

4:02

I don't know who the [ __ ] he is, but I challenge his [ __ ] legal team to come at me guns blazing.

4:08

As someone who grew up listening to hip-hop, do you miss the comedic sketches that used to serve as a kind of connective tissue between songs? Hell no.

4:15

That was like a fast-forward exercise, and I had to that [ __ ] on cassette tape.

4:22

And just hearing guys just roast each other and [ __ ] I was just like I had one Redman album where it was like the sketches were like 45 minutes in between each song.

4:31

I'm like, "What what are we doing here, guys?"

4:34

Redman is one of the funniest rappers. I love Redman.

4:35

Hopefully he wasn't taking that as an insult. I love love love Redman.

4:40

Uh I I actually got arrested when I was 18 years old seeing him live at um in Miami at the Miami uh Heat game theater.

4:47

Uh what did they charge you with? Marijuana.

4:56

Pulled over on in Fresno.

4:58

Are these the same sauces I did last time?

5:01

So the operation's a little bit more sophisticated now.

5:02

Uh back when you were on the show, we were just kind of throwing darts, and then we've since kind of gotten our [ __ ] together as far as hot sauce curation goes.

5:09

Um but The Bomb, which I think was your number eight when you when you were there, we haven't found a sauce that's quite like it, so we've kept that in.

5:18

So that's a sauce had before.

5:24

These are like sleeper sleeper hits. My nose is running. These sneak up on you. Uh I can't even No. That one snuck up on me.

5:33

So I once heard Ashton Kutcher make the point that a show like Punk'd is more a study of human nature than it is like candid camera with celebrities.

5:38

Has doing The Eric Andre Show taught you anything about human fallibility in tense situations? Mm.

5:47

Makes me less cynical, actually.

5:47

People are like really willing to help each other out when they're in a when they're presented with an odd situation.

5:56

There's also this YouTube phenomenon of channels passing off obviously fake pranks as real. Does that bother you?

6:02

Like do you think there needs to be a sense of ethics in the prank genre? I do personally.

6:06

I mean, to each their own, but like to me there's absolutely no point unless you're doing it for real. There's no stakes. It defeats the purpose.

6:15

It's completely pointless.

6:18

All right, Eric, how was that one?

6:18

We're still in a manageable place. How's the build? Um, it's okay.

6:22

It's got a little bit of a lingering effect and they all have a cumulative effect, so but it's okay.

6:28

These first three are like they're they're realistic.

6:38

I I I have a sense this one's a [ __ ] This is hotter hotter than L, correct? Mhm. Okay.

6:56

Oh, this one's going to suck. I can tell. Yeah.

6:58

It's got a good flavor, though.

6:58

It's got a little tang to it.

7:03

So, as anyone who follows you knows, you're always up for a good time and it seems like you really have been exploring the world of cocktails lately.

7:10

Where do you fall in the great debate of mixologist versus bartender?

7:11

Do you think there's actually a difference?

7:16

I actually think the the tastiest drinks are the simple ones.

7:20

But the real real make or break for me is if you're using fresh squeezed juice or pre-made juice.

7:31

That is such a make it or break it.

7:36

If you're not fresh squeezing that lime right before you make that drink get the [ __ ] out my face Cuz that's the stuff that gives you the hangover, the pre-made, sugary, high fructose corn syrup mixes.

7:47

They just made that juice, pineapple juice, watermelon juice.

7:52

As long as they make it that, at least that day, then they're a good bartender.

7:58

What's been your proudest cocktail creation during quarantine, and can you tell us how to make it? Mhm.

8:05

I just made one called a yellow number two.

8:09

And it's um it's yellow pepper juice.

8:11

It's mezcal, 1 and 1/2 oz of mezcal, 1 and 1/2 oz of yellow pepper juice, 1/2 an oz of yellow Chartreuse, 1/2 an oz of simple syrup, 1/2 an oz of lemon juice.

8:24

Shake it, strain it, put it in a rocks glass, and put smoked salt and charred shishito peppers as the garnish.

8:32

Oh, [ __ ] I want it good though, the one I'm reacting Baja too. Uh.

8:47

Should I refrigerate these after opening?

8:49

How long will they last in the fridge?

8:52

A long time, months, long time. Hot sauce lasts. Not like Not like years.

8:58

Maybe you could get a year out of it. That vinegar. Oh my god. Oh yeah, that's true.

9:03

So, tell me about this one.

9:05

So, uh this is Los Calientes Rojo.

9:05

It's like uh Oh, it's delicious. You like that one? Mhm.

9:15

No, it's about to kick my ass, though. The first bite.

9:20

Okay, Eric, we have a recurring segment on our show called Explain That Gram, where we do a deep dive on our guest's Instagram, pull interesting pictures that need more context.

9:25

So, I'll show you the picture, you just tell me the bigger story, and we have a Meet Your Heroes theme today for Eric Andre, okay?

9:33

I love that you tell me right when the spice is like kicking my [ __ ] ass, he do this whole wordy explanation and I'm like I'm like in a like few state.

9:45

First things first, it's you with Johnny Knoxville.

9:46

What is it about Jackass that made it such a billion show? They're likable. You root for them.

9:55

They're not mean-spirited.

9:58

They are They are self-deprecating about themselves.

10:05

Oh my god, that one's torturous, dude.

10:08

Has anyone ever thrown up on the show?

10:10

You know, I don't not in front of me, but I've like people have bailed to the restroom with urgency before.

10:18

My butt hole's about to throw up after we're done.

10:21

As a student of the game, what makes Sacha Baron Cohen such a master of the craft of satire? He's a genius.

10:29

He's got like a 180 IQ, I guess.

10:32

He's operating at a higher frequency.

10:35

He's got a death wish, you know.

10:37

He puts himself in violent situations. How are you not in pain? The [ __ ] man.

10:42

Get the [ __ ] out of here.

10:43

I think I just I know what to expect.

10:45

Eric, you know, when when you and me met for the first time, we hadn't done that many episodes and now we're like over 200 episodes.

10:50

I've had lots of practice.

10:53

You got your own game show, right? Yeah, yeah.

10:55

And I don't even have to eat on that one. Oh my god.

10:59

How you going to film it in COVID?

11:02

You know, well, what's nice about game shows we we shot like the whole year's worth like in 10 days back in December.

11:10

Oh, so you living on easy street, man. I see that flat screen.

11:12

You got a new flat screen. I'm proud of you, man. Suck my [ __ ] sideways. This is hot.

11:29

Careful on the big pores here in the back half, Eric.

11:33

I think that's what I what was [ __ ] me up.

11:40

What did Coolio do again? Remind me.

11:42

Uh he let the bravado get to him and on the last wing he popped the sauce and then emptied it onto the wing. Cleaned it god.

11:51

poker face and then it's like a a time bomb went off inside his body. Suicide. All right.

11:55

Just a little dabble, right?

12:01

These are kind of dangerous, right? Yeah. Oh my god.

12:04

This one's going to suck.

12:07

So with Hot Ones we put a lot of pride into trying to extend for our guest and put together the best possible version of a career spanning interview, but I feel like doing a purposefully bad interview probably takes even more prep. All right, man. This show sucks, man.

12:33

I love you, but this is brutal.

12:36

Are there certain elements or mechanics that make a bad interview funny to you? I'm glad you asked.

12:47

Um yeah, the more awkward they are the more funny you are.

12:55

I think I would I'm getting worse at this with age.

13:00

Do you have a lasting memory of going toe-to-toe with Nardwuar?

13:01

The internet loves to unpack that one. Um I love Nardwuar.

13:05

Everybody thought I was like being mean to him. But I love that guy.

13:09

I mean his research skills unmatched. I mean he's prolific.

13:18

He's interviewed everyone and he gets access to everyone.

13:24

I have such admiration for him.

13:24

I was harassing him to help us with these season 5 and help us like do like private eye investigative work for the guests to find deep kind of information. He refused to do it. He was very standoffish.

13:40

He didn't want anything to do with me.

13:44

I was really heartbroken.

13:46

All right, Eric, you're doing great.

13:47

Only uh only a few more to go here. not. Yes, you are, Eric.

13:51

Sean, you got to fix your screen.

13:51

You got your Pornhub menu up behind you, dude. Keep it classy.

13:56

You want to get me tooed in the middle of this thing? Jesus Christ. I'm sorry, Don.

14:02

I'm sorry Don for Sean's behavior.

14:06

I'd like to apologize on his behalf.

14:18

Okay, this is going to suck. What up?

14:24

I can tell when they're really going to suck.

14:25

They have a specific taste. It's like a metallic. Yeah.

14:29

It actually doesn't taste good that hot anyway.

14:36

I said the ones on the Holy [ __ ] Oh my god.

14:44

So, last time you were on the show, you talked about how your personality off camera is a lot less extreme than people would expect, describing yourself as sedated and out of it, and saying that you jog and eat salads.

14:53

Do you still meditate twice a day? I sure do. Oh, I'm going to cry. Calm me the [ __ ] down. I'm anxious.

15:11

None of them were [ __ ] till that one.

15:14

I know that you're a big Michael Pollan fan.

15:15

Is there anything you found fascinating about his recent deep dive into the world of psychedelics?

15:20

Out of all out of all of them he'll never do toad venom again.

15:31

He says the only one he won't repeat.

15:35

He had no sense of self and he he he had no sense of what mattered was.

15:42

Do you feel like you're tripping right now?

15:45

I've been in a different place. I can't do the bottle.

15:54

If I do it this has got to be one drop. Yeah, very light. Very light, Eric.

16:08

I can't believe what I'm going through.

16:13

Is it worse than you remember?

16:15

It is worse than I remember. It's a dollar wall.

16:21

Uh I've been in a state of panic.

16:27

Uh I love the Idris Elba memes that come out of your show.

16:35

I think you might uh make some of your own today. My god, it's so funny. It's so funny. What was he reacting to? Which This one. This one.

16:55

Why did you keep this one?

16:55

Why did this stand the test of time?

16:59

Because that's how you get the Idris Elba meme.

17:04

Oh my god, it's death, dude. Let's do it.

17:16

Why did I agree to do this again? Ah, save me, Idris. Save me from myself.

17:25

It kind of feels like when you're getting drunk at the bar and your friends are ordering you more and more shots and that last shot you take, you're like, "I can't no more."

17:33

And then you see another shot coming. Sorry, mad dog. Ah, overserved. Okay. Two drops.

17:52

This one's for Idris Elba.

17:55

May we all one day have the same size penis. Ah.

18:09

So, as you mentioned, your Netflix special is titled Legalize Everything, but what I want to know on this wing is, do you really mean it?

18:14

This is a brand new segment that we're calling Legalize It.

18:19

So, I'll hit you with some crazy regional laws we researched on the internet and you just tell me whether or not you should you would legalize them and why.

18:29

In Washing- In Washington state, killing Bigfoot is punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

18:38

Hunting Bigfoot, legalize it? This one.

18:47

This one wakes you up, man. This one wakes you up. Good god.

18:57

Don't touch your eyes or your face here, okay?

19:03

It is what it is, the water.

19:05

In Washington state, killing Bigfoot is punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

19:09

Would you legalize hunting Bigfoot? Sure. Whatever you want, man. Taking us for a tour? I'm going to throw up.

20:21

I bought milk of magnesia cuz I was going to a lot of protests and I didn't want to get tear gassed or pepper sprayed and if I did I was going to pour it in my eyes.

20:32

But now you found another use. Yeah.

20:38

I'm about to take a [ __ ] dude.

20:59

[ __ ] Hey Eric, Eric, how about this?

21:02

Let's just Let's Let's slow it down. Let's slow it down.

21:06

No need to keep pushing forward.

21:09

You've already done it before. You know what I mean?

21:11

It's not like It's not like there's that much at stake here.

21:15

Let's just Let's just slow it down, okay? No need to eat anymore. No need to eat anymore. Don't eat anymore, Eric.

21:25

I have no I have no room left in my stomach, man.

21:38

That [ __ ] is [ __ ] real, dude. Eric, it's okay. Eric, it's okay. You know what?

21:43

It was It was a It was a fun It was I'm happy that we connected over the over the Zoom here, over the QuickTime here. It's going to be great. I saw the special. It's really funny.

21:51

I I hope everybody who's watching now goes out and watch it on Netflix.

21:55

Eric Andre season 5 later this year and then of course Bad Trip on Netflix. Keep an eye out.

22:02

It's good to see you, Eric. Best of luck.

22:05

I hope you recover soon, okay, buddy? Thanks, man. I appreciate it. I'll talk to you soon. All right. Peace, Eric. Peace.

22:19

It's like I got pepper sprayed, dude.

22:20

It's like I got sprayed by a skunk. I need milk of magnesia.

22:28

Tonight Show, where you at?

22:34

Hey, what's going on, Hot Ones fans?

22:35

This is Sean Evans checking in with one camera guy. How you doing, Steven? You good? Good. Steven's good.

22:42

There's no one else in this building except for the two of us.

22:47

It is lockdown over here, but you know what?

22:48

The Pepper Dome is open for all new episodes of Hot Ones the game show Tuesdays on truTV, the Pepper Dome.

22:53

See you there if you dare. Hey.
