How do you even approach a scene like that as an actress?

That seems like such a singular sequence.

>> It was and even kind of leading up to that moment where she starts [music] speaking in this um non-human language.

Um it it's a 4-minute oner that we shot that leads up to that moment where she's gradually sort of disintegrating.

And um did you hear that throat gurgle? >> [laughter] >> I did.

Is that like panic or is it >> It almost was like the scene.

[laughter] Um You know, there's various ways you could do it.

You could go the AI route, which I'm a bit >> [music] >> terrified of.

I thought I could make some real really strange sounds as you've all just seen.

Um so I said, "Maybe I could come in and we'll just do a range of weird sounds."

[music] And it's what we did.

And I did sort of the clicking sounds.

I did sort of humming sounds, consonant sounds, breathing strange sounds.

And >> [music] >> and what we did was we put a mic one microphone here and one here.

And so it [music] kind of captures it in a really weird way and then the sound designer went away and created that weird sound. >> It's like eggplant. Okay.

>> What if my throat gargles get increasingly worse and people think I am actually an alien?

>> Well, you talk about the imprints of a film, you know, like that's you leaving an imprint on the episode, you know.

Does that at all ring true to you?

And if so, is there a role from your career that you sometimes wish you could revisit with fresh eyes?

>> I have been known to like 2 months after I wrap a movie.

If I'm like driving the kids somewhere, I'll suddenly go, "That's how you should [music] have played it."

Like I'll just have this memory of a line that I didn't feel was right and it's hard because you know, when you're doing a film, I mean, some people like to watch playback.

I don't really watch anything while I'm filming.

So, >> [music] >> you're seeing it from the inside out.

And then when you first see it back at yourself, I tend to kind of pick myself apart a little bit.

So, maybe that's when I'm filled with a bit of regret.

Like that's sort of how you self-correct and how you learn.

I'm trying to think of parts I played where I'm like, "You really [ __ ] the bed on that one." Look at me.

I'm being like, "All my performances have been great."

I wouldn't say as a whole, but there's moments and scenes that [music] I'm just like someone should have put a choke chain on me or something, you know?

Now, I like Sriracha, but this one >> Mhm. >> Skeptical going in.

>> Weirdly, that one's better than the hot bhut jolokia. >> [laughter] >> Okay.

And maybe cuz I'm kind of used to sriracha.

Do you think it's harder to make a quotable [music] movie script these days?

You know, it's like lines from Zoolander or Anchorman or The Devil Wears Prada that used to be baked right into the lexicon. >> [music] >> Yes.

Um, but I also think those quotes sort of amplify with time.

I think when The Devil Wears Prada first came out, I think people thought it was really funny.

I think it was over time that it built this sort of meteoric following.

I think Aline Brosh McKenna writes incredibly meme-able Is it gif-able or gif-able? I never know.

>> What's the most Tom Cruise thing you saw Tom Cruise do on the set of Edge of Tomorrow?

>> [laughter] >> We were doing a scene where we were in a drop ship [music] um and we're in those massive armored suits.

And when you're surrounded by Tom Cruise's enthusiasm, it kind of bleeds into you and you feel like [music] you can't let him down by complaining about anything.

It's a very powerful force coming off him.

But we were in this drop ship [music] and I'd kind of had it.

It was very hot in there.

My suit weighed 80 lb and I'm in a harness being lifted up so the entire weight of my body and 85 lb is on my nether regions [music] and I'm not feeling great about it, wondering if I'll be able to have children one day.

And we're swinging there and I just and I could see Tom the enthusiasm was starting to unravel a little bit.

So I knew I had an in, you know? [music] >> Mhm.

>> And he was getting a bit frustrated with how long things were taking >> [music] >> to shoot and yelling, "Please roll."

And I just looked at him and I went, >> [snorts] >> "This [ __ ] sucks."

And he looked at me and he went, >> [snorts] >> "It's a challenge."

>> [laughter] >> I'm just looking [music] at the ominous de balm. Mhm.

You know what's strange about it? >> Tell me.

>> It says like it's got all these peppers on it, but it doesn't really specify whether it is mild or hot. >> Yeah, you're right.

It's kind of it's a mystery box.

Right in the mean of what we have planned for you today. Does it feel like it?

You know, I feel like you've >> Yeah, that one just got me a little hot under the collar.

>> From having a bus driving at you at full speed for a quiet place to it's the walls closing in caving in on you in Sicario, what's the most genuinely frightened you've ever been while shooting an action sequence?

>> I mean, the bus was extraordinary, but I knew that stunt had been rehearsed for 2 weeks, [music] and I knew that there were many get-outs.

Like if the bus was going to be too close, it could careen off.

I knew there allowances there.

The most scared I was was doing [music] that arrival in Mary Poppins from up in the clouds. I was terrified.

I did three takes before my tolerance snapped, and I was done.

And Rob Marshall, [music] the director, is so he kind of lures you into this false sense of security, and he plays music really, really loud, and it's really sweeping and and extraordinary coming out of the speakers, and he goes, "Okay, so you're going to be way up there, and then you're going to come down, you're going to walk straight into your close-up."

And it just he sells it sells you on it.

You're like, "Oh my god, this sounds amazing."

And then you get up there, and you go 25 ft, 30 ft, 40 [music] ft, 60 ft, and I was like, And the only thing you have you just hope the wires [music] are holding you.

>> [laughter] >> A lot of trust, yeah. A lot of trust, yeah.

>> a lot of trust that you need, and and I felt like everything looked tiny.

And if I looked [music] out, I was higher than the trees.

If I looked down, Lin-Manuel Miranda was that big.

And so I just ended up hanging there waiting for for to call action like that.

Like looking up at the sky where I had no point of reference, but that was the most scared I've been. Tropical amarillo Mhm.

>> Directors have cemented their place in the imagination of movie fans, but I feel like cinematography is more of like an insider's craft.

What kind of role or how would you quantify the importance of a DP like Roger Deakins in the way that they transform a film?

>> Just [music] try not to burp as you as I talk about the great Roger Deakins because [laughter] that wouldn't be great.

I think when [music] Deakins was working on Sicario, it was such a pleasure watching him work.

I mean, when he lights, it's like you're at church. Like don't make a peep.

Just shooting something playing I just don't know if it's terribly interesting for an audience.

They won't know why they're not interested if [music] you're not don't know enough about how a movie's shot.

But they'll just feel something else watching a Steven Spielberg movie or watching a Sicario and how Roger used the cameras like this kind of prowling um claustrophobic sort of [music] observer.

And then you feel my character's panic and you feel her claustrophobia and you feel her entrapment [music] in this situation she's in.

So, I think it's hugely important.

Feel like my upper lip is sweating a little bit. >> Oh, sweet. >> At first. >> Mhm. Yep.

I think a lot of people watched it, a lot of people I know watched it when they were kids.

I think if you watch it as an adult, [music] it takes on a whole different form of storytelling and the humanity of fear and these three men confined in a boat and what their fear really means and how they relate to each other, [music] I think.

And it's about outsiders.

It's about people not belonging.

And there's so many beautiful themes that there are in all of Steven's that [music] it's high-stakes action and it's you know, and it's it's it's it's big-scale storytelling, but I think he has this emotional grounding running through all of it and this humanity.
