it have not the first time we know that you guys rallied around storms as well um but nice to be able to to get one for for this album how did this happen man man ed is the most wonderful it's probably the most amazing guy i've met in my life man he got me because he showed nothing but love from day one you understand so it's something that's just this that was
really natural got me in the slide it's one of the ones where it's just like back to back you hit me it's just it's so natural it's almost like we made like five songs like you know on the same day that's how organic it was you know how did you know that this was the one you wanted to finish and put on the album he knew that why am i not surprised
that's it for you that's it for you he's mad genius you know people don't give him enough credit he's got the genius gene literally literally how did he tell you because that's one of the things let's get real let's get real granular one of my favorite things is getting ed sheeran stories about how he is able to influence strong artists in a really
lovely way because he's dude he's strong with his opinion yeah it's not but it's not even that he doesn't it's not like he imposes anything on you it's just it's just so natural and so logical yeah like i don't know the guy's just such a genius man it's just he just knows what's what and when you know so it's like as soon as we die we it's
like this was the last one we did we worked on we started working on and that he was like yeah this is it this is the one this is it you killed me at the time i wanted one of our there was another one i thought okay it'd be cool the feeling this should be the one like get me and then we made this one and then boom it was just next level you built the bridge man
you and and some of your contemporaries built the bridge from africa to the world in a modern in a modern landscape and on this particular album burner you've decided to make it more of a personal experience rather than just carrying the world on your shoulders and doing it solely for the people and for the fans and for the community i feel like this has been an important
album for you yes yeah because this is this is this is like my birthday gift to me you know in a way because it's like there's no better gift to give myself you know than um something something personal and and given a part of literally giving a part of myself to the whole world you know you know the album title says it all right love demeanor that is that is
who you are that is the name you were given at birth you have since created this identity burner boy which is an extension of who you were at birth and who you've become as a man and an artist but calling it something personal like that did that help influence the nature of the music or did it come at the end of the creative process like when when i'm making a project i
know what the project is you know like it has to start with with the name of the project you know and then we build you know it's like a movie it's like yo if the movie is called um [Music] matrix or whatever you get me then you know in the movie there should be some matrix things going on and some zeros and ones and so you can have a
movie called matrix and then there's uh flowers and and and uh what's the guys seth rogen smoking weed and stuff like that is that your handwriting on the album cover yes everything is personal of course of course it makes total sense silly question what's interesting is the flourish you put in your capital l's yeah i don't know why i do that and also i
it's it's fascinating how your capital e the center stroke of your capital e horizontal is like very interesting i know i know i can't judge you brother my hair i've got the hair running of a four-year-old when i go through customs in any country bro and i have to hand write out those customs forms people look at me like i don't even want to let you in this country
i don't want to let you in here just based on the quality of your handwriting idiot should we have a little drink break as we're catching up do you want to have a little sippy or delicious beverage will i sit yeah yeah shake me and water that jesus turned into wine maybe hi cheers my bro cheers man congratulations berna from strength to strength something really jumped out to me in
your recent activities and that was that you played a sold out show at a stadium in zimbabwe and you made a decision not to let politics enter into your environment even though there was an incentive to do that um and you made a decision to not um let that let that experience be leveraged for one reason or another um can you just take us a little deeper
into that moment of of because being such a powerful entertainer and such a strong voice for the community it makes sense that others would try to reach your audience through you and you have to have a lot of strength in order to keep that in a place where it belongs rather than let it come and influence your process so how is that experience
and for you for me it's something i've dealt with my whole career so it's not anything new for me i don't know why anyone feels like it's something new it's something that if you research uh far enough you see that i've dealt with this my whole career like i've turned down i've turned down how do i even put this in a way that is nice but i've turned down things that
even greater men than me could not turn down you know because i do not want any involvement in politics and trickery you understand and i've always made my stance clear where all of that is concerned so i see no reason for surprise yeah it's not so much a surprise it's more just how do you maintain your resolve as those as the trickery gets louder right
you maintain drinking water it's natural food it's something that is who i am it's just what it is it's just you get me if you don't like fish you don't like fish they're not going to grow until 60 years old and say oh i like fish now when your whole life you're not like this is the same concept so you really strongly feel and then we'll move on you
strongly feel that even if the right person that truly had captured your holistic goals in life spoke almost like like a second language to you you understood this person and what they stood for do you feel like you your architecture is is is so in place that you would you'll never ever soften that that stance or are you taking it one situation at a time
i mean for me it's something where at this point i can only speak for now because i don't know you know what's going to happen tomorrow as regards to the world you know and who may come into the picture yeah yeah fair enough you know i can't really say but i can speak for today as of today i don't believe that there's anybody that is that is um how do i put this
that is worthy enough to play god that's qualified enough to play god i don't really it's not something that i i blame anyone for they understand because at the end of the day god is there's there is god so that's what we should be looking up to yeah yeah yeah everything else is going to be flawed there's going to be there's going to be holes in everything
else you cannot like say yeah i believe in this person to lead my generation or to lead my people and to lead me to the promised land do you understand without expecting that there's a possibility that look this person is also human and he has flesh just like me and he bleeds just like me and he's prone to the same type of temptation and corruption and there's some leaders who
it's not that they're bad they're actually good but they're surrounded by evil the system doesn't support the vision all the way through and and in some respects this is where music and art can can really make the hugest difference because and it was william who said this to me that he genuinely feels that the the language of art is is to this day one of if not the only um
channel of communication that remains ultimately pure because it cannot be distorted from completion to distribution now what happens afterwards people can have opinions that's one thing but the actual origin of the message and the original art that gets shared remains whole and intact you know so for me that's why i stick to music and i don't
really like at this point i feel like i've i've said all this to say about for the the the realities yeah yeah you know hey i'm looking at this checklist right here and there's uh there's some really great i mean obviously you start and you end up with with lady smith black members which has obviously got to be hugely soulful experience for you
legendary moments first yeah yeah and then in between you know you get to dance in lots of interesting and great places which makes sense for you um but i'm picking out j balvin specific because you know belvin just came from a great and groundbreaking collaboration with a prominent indian artist he's already done wonders for his own community by
breaking out helping to break out latin music on the global stage and then to move into a space with you as well it's just it's just i love the idea of globalizing everything in that regard and i wonder how it was working with belvin because he's a he's a brilliant and brave artist i think an amazing guy too man an amazing person someone who you know um
yeah kind of had that connection kind of have that connection and yeah sometimes i'll shoot him a text you know shoot me a text you get me make sure you get me head is right it cannot be at me so that's how it is man so i love it today you get me it's a global it's a global it's a global um village it's going to be one of the things that people really sort of are
able to reflect upon your legacy when all is said and done man people don't understand that that's the beauty of planet earth man it's the diversity and the ability and the fact that you you can go and explore and find out and learn and you know implement and you know all types of that's the beauty of the world man right down to the beginning of time
from when they discovered boats and they can that they could go places and find land on boats do you understand like that's what the world is about it's been about they understand so i mean yeah man it all comes together you've been traveling now and seeing the world through your art and through the filter of what you do now for for quite some years do you have any particular place
in the world that truly captured your heart that's not home i mean the whole world really catches my heart man forget me because it's so it's almost like the world won't be the same without any one part it's like if one part of the world was to be wiped out today the world will feel that something's changed there's something's missing and i said so
