Bill Burr Gets Red in the Face While Eating Spicy Wings | Hot Ones

0:02

I got to walk it off. Yeah, yeah. Go ahead.

0:03

Take a Take a lap, take a lap, Bill. Oh my god.

0:07

Dude, that's the hottest [ __ ] thing I've ever ate.

0:15

Hey, what's going on, everybody?

0:15

For First We Feast, I'm Sean Evans, and you're watching Hot Ones.

0:18

It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.

0:20

And at long last, I'm joined by Bill Burr.

0:23

Bill, he's one of the biggest stand-up comedians in the game.

0:24

You know him as the host of the Monday Morning Podcast and as the co-creator and star of Netflix's F Is for Family, now entering its third season.

0:31

Bill, welcome to the show. Thank you for having me.

0:35

Well, it's good to have you in this seat finally.

0:36

How are you with spicy food?

0:37

You can get up a little bit? I a little bit.

0:38

I don't I don't get crazy.

0:40

I like this is going to be all the comedic elements that you want that's going to happen. Look at me. I'm I'm pasty as hell. I Yeah.

0:46

You and I both most of my [ __ ] was boiled growing up. Very bland.

0:51

You know, salt and pepper was about as hard as we went in our house. All right, Bill.

1:05

So, this first one is the the whole thing, too, man.

1:06

These chickens died, man. You got to eat them.

1:09

Well, you know, I'll remember that you said that.

1:11

You know, if you stick with that, I'll stick with that, and I'll eat the whole wing right along with you. It's a time of waste. So, what is this one? This is the the classic. The classic.

1:26

We've got some wing dough here. All right.

1:32

So, you've been dealing with this masshole stereotype your whole life.

1:33

I think to a lot of audiences, you're their first exposure to this New England accent and sensibility.

1:38

So, what I want to do is bounce some Boston-related stories.

1:42

I want to ask you about Hunting?

1:44

That was a little bigger than my [ __ ] act, but okay. I'll give it to you. All right.

1:47

So, what I I'm the ambassador for Massachusetts.

1:50

Dunkin' Donuts removing Donuts from the name.

1:53

Do people care about that in Boston as much as they seem to on the internet.

1:57

So they're called Dunkin? Mhm.

1:59

That is a incredibly [ __ ] stupid idea. You think so? Yes.

2:06

I mean, how bored were they?

2:06

Like how much money were they making at at those places where they're like, "Hey, let's let's [ __ ] with what everybody knows."

2:13

They over They overthink [ __ ] I mean, it's their company. I wouldn't have done it.

2:18

Boston drivers are no longer the worst in the country, according to Allstate.

2:21

Does that ring true to you?

2:24

Um well, this is this is how I've driven everywhere in this country pretty much.

2:29

Uh East Coast, they're bad, but they're aggressively bad.

2:31

I don't mind aggressively bad, cuz whatever you did, eventually you're going to get the [ __ ] out of my way, right? Mhm.

2:37

Out here, they're just bad.

2:37

You got to do like 100 mph to get off the highway.

2:43

But when you get on the surface streets, it's like they're staring at their phones or they took a pot cookie.

2:46

Oh, and people who ride bikes in LA. Um um morons. Morons.

2:50

They [ __ ] dress up like they're in a bike race, and then they just drive out in the road.

2:55

And they always yell, "Share the road." It's like, "Well, yeah. Yeah, you too. Move over." Move over.

3:02

I had loud enough time to get there in a car.

3:05

Not follow you on your [ __ ] bicycle. Lance.

3:09

And I I know I'm not saying it's not a bad thing when they die, but it's not shocking. Are you still baking? Uh yeah.

3:18

You know, a lot of people think that baking versus regular cooking it's a personality tell, like being a cat person or a dog person.

3:24

Do you think there's might be something about the precision of baking that appeals to you?

3:29

I think if somebody had a like a psychology background, they could actually say that, but I'm guessing most of that was by people who maybe took one psych class.

3:37

Um no, people get freaked out by baking. It's actually easy.

3:39

You just do exactly what they tell you to do.

3:41

I'm actually learning now how to how to cook more healthy, cuz I'm [ __ ] old. I'm 50, you know. I'm making smoothies. Yeah.

3:49

I had like a hummus sandwich before I came over here. It's actually good.

3:50

You feel light afterwards and you feel kind of energized, you know?

3:53

My big thing now is lentil burgers.

3:55

I mean, I'm not going to lie to you.

3:57

Like I still I still like root beer. And like I don't know.

4:04

Root beer is my thing, though.

4:05

And then I know that you're a Food Network fan back in the day.

4:06

Are you still entertained by food TV or has it lost a little bit of its charm with all these competitions?

4:12

once they started yelling at each other and it's just like, "Okay, you got to make pancakes.

4:15

You have a toaster and a [ __ ] chicken wing."

4:19

It's just like like cooking is supposed to be relaxing and it's one of the like the one of the nicest things you can do for somebody.

4:25

By the way, I appreciate the free chicken here. I got you. Got you, Bill.

4:29

You know, you just add all this pressure to it.

4:30

Like I always found out like I worked in a kitchen and there were times when there was screaming and yelling, but when you watch those shows where it's just all screaming and yelling, it's just for for the TV.

4:39

I always want to read that Anthony Bourdain book, but I'm like it makes me go to sleep.

4:43

Can we have another one of these? Sure. Oh, this one looks good. Maplewood smoked onions. Nice.

4:57

All right, I'm not going to lie to you. Mhm.

4:59

This is about as hot as I usually go. We're on number three.

5:03

Are you still committed to that idea of eating all 10? No, I'm going to. I'm definitely going to.

5:08

I mean, what's the this is the the whole bit is to watch somebody [ __ ] nose run. Yeah. Exactly. Salute, Bill.

5:13

Since we touched on your intro, F is for Family is entering its third season.

5:16

In addition to creating it and starring it, I know that you're making the donuts in the writer's room and stand up.

5:21

It's such a solitary game, you know, it goes from your brain to the audience with no filter.

5:25

What's different to you about the collaborative process of the writer's room?

5:30

The lack of respect that writers get, like how [ __ ] hard it is, you know what I mean?

5:34

Everybody talks about actors.

5:35

Oh, he gained weight for this and how did you get your abs?

5:37

It's just like, dude, like somebody [ __ ] sat and and just like missed his kids growing up so you could go out and go be [ __ ] you know, I don't know, whatever, The Flash, whatever the [ __ ] they're doing movies about nowadays.

5:52

And then Netflix seems to be in the middle of this comedy gold rush, you know, from these multi-million dollar Dave Chappelle deals to the stand-up specials, the original series like F is for Family.

6:00

And I'm curious about your perspective on Netflix and its impact on the business of comedy.

6:06

I my first hour special I did uh Why Do I Do This, I remember clearly I was at the Improv on Melrose and somebody said uh what do you want for your intro?

6:14

And I said blah blah blah blah.

6:15

You can watch his new special Why Do I Do This on Netflix.

6:19

And the guy said it and people snickered in the crowd.

6:23

That's how That's how long I've been with those guys.

6:24

They were like still considered the guys that delivered videos to you.

6:26

And they thought it was funny.

6:29

And then like within like I think 3 years of that they were like the place to be.

6:36

Um so, that and Breaking Bad were two things that I got in on early.

6:41

And I feel like if I didn't I would have I would have uh probably got lost in the herd.

6:44

Breaking Bad I saw, you know, the first episode immediately asked my agent, "Oh, I'll [ __ ] do anything.

6:49

I'll I'll carry the meth in the background, anything."

6:53

Um so, I think I got in early with the request.

6:55

All right, what do we got here? Oh, I [ __ ] love that. You clean that off, man? I did. Check Check the can.

7:07

That's a That's a dead bird right there. I'm right with you. I'm right with you.

7:12

I'm leaving nothing on the plate.

7:13

I had a woman one time come up to me after a show and tell me that she was a card-carrying member of PETA.

7:18

I forget what joke I did.

7:20

Was she upset about a joke that you did? Yeah.

7:22

But she said I'm a card-carrying member of PETA.

7:23

Like, yeah, you don't need to do sign up.

7:25

It's like she got a [ __ ] MBA.

7:29

So, you once called the cuntiness of sports writers unparalleled and these days there does seem to be a lot of outrage porn coming from the dweebs who cover professional sports.

7:36

So, what I want to do is just bounce some hot button barroom debates off of you cuz I think the nose bleeds need Bill Burr's perspective. I'm starting to sweat. Feeling it.

7:46

Are you looking forward to seeing Maroon 5 and Cardi B perform at this year's Super Bowl halftime show?

7:51

I just hate how it's the most important football game of the year and they do it and they there's just so much other [ __ ] going on and all these people who don't give a [ __ ] about football show up and they talk during the game and then they shut up during the commercials and then when the game comes back on they're like, "How much do you think that one cost?"

8:07

And it's just like So I don't go to I try not to go to Super Bowl parties cuz I always end up in the kitchen on that that little [ __ ] TV or whatever, so.

8:16

What do you think is a sillier protest, cutting up your Nike socks or burning your LeBron jersey?

8:21

I would say both equally stupid.

8:24

Um but uh because of what was behind Colin Kaepernick, it was way it was just I just hate that you knew you knew the second he did it it was eventually going to be like, "My brother's fighting in Iraq."

8:37

And it's just like, "Dude, nobody is saying your brother isn't fighting in Iraq."

8:40

He's talking about police brutality. This is what it is.

8:42

And how that was just hijacked.

8:44

And also, you know, he's on his knees.

8:46

That's more respectful than standing up, right? Taking your hat off. I get it.

8:52

I don't understand the experience because I'm [ __ ] white, you know?

8:56

I look like a cop, so I could drive like 90 anywhere. Cops just wave at me. They think they know me.

9:04

But uh yeah, some cops steal jokes.

9:04

Some cops [ __ ] kill people.

9:09

Not saying get rid of all the cops, they're just saying, "Hey, get rid of the bad ones."

9:12

It's very logical argument.

9:19

Hi Bill, we have a crane segment on our show called Explain That Gram.

9:20

We do a deep dive on our guest's Instagram pull interesting pictures that need more context.

9:24

So I'll bust out the laptop, I'll show you the picture and you just tell me the bigger story. Does that sound good? You talk really fast.

9:30

All right, laptop, please.

9:32

I'm actually drinking water right now cuz I was so dry. Sorry, Bill. I recommend some places.

9:39

Yeah, what's your go-to wings joint?

9:41

I'm not I'm not I'm not blowing it up here.

9:42

So, I have to stand in line at my same [ __ ] my favorite place?

9:46

What is the craziest bout you saw when you were doing color commentary at Rough N' Rowdy, that amateur boxing event? Oh god.

9:56

Um I think the two brothers that fought each other.

10:01

There was two brothers and one of them was in the armed forces and was like, you know, making stuff for himself.

10:08

The other one didn't have a job or something and played video games and he hated his mom saying his mother loved the other one better.

10:16

So, he's like in the shadow of his older brother.

10:17

Well, this is the best thing.

10:17

His brother who's in the military agreed, said, "Yeah, she likes me better." So, it was undeniable.

10:24

And then he said that people in the armed services were overrated.

10:27

Like they're not that tough.

10:29

And then they went out and they beat the [ __ ] out of each other.

10:30

I forget I want to say the video game kid won.

10:32

But what was funny was they were both in the same shape.

10:36

So, this guy never even got off the couch and this other guy, you know, he had to go through basic training and everything.

10:40

I was kind of amazed by that. That was a good one.

10:42

It's, you know, it's one of those things I really grew up watching a lot of those tough man competitions and the fact that Barstool brought them back um was it's just been a lot of fun.

10:51

So, I'm so it's like those guys let me come on every once in a while.

10:54

The next one is October 5th.

10:55

I don't know when this comes out.

10:58

It will have already been out. But you know what?

11:01

I guess go into the backlog or something.

11:03

Yeah, go into the backlog.

11:04

What do you remember about your conversation with Danica Patrick?

11:06

Did you guys talk about classic cars?

11:09

Uh no, she was like just dialed in.

11:13

Like she had like astronaut Chuck Yeager.

11:16

Like just it was awesome.

11:16

Like [ __ ] hand like vice handshake and uh what was funny was when we got in the car and we were driving around the Indianapolis 500, which I'd been to. I've gone to it twice.

11:28

And um and it's just you come down the straightaway. It's it's iconic.

11:31

It's just I can't explain it.

11:33

It's just like, oh my god.

11:34

Like I remember seeing A. J. A. J.

11:36

Foyt and all these guys Rick Mears and all these people growing up.

11:39

I was talking to her about how she was going to retire after the race.

11:41

She said she was retiring.

11:45

I'm like, that's that's awesome.

11:45

You retire and she literally she punched me in the shoulder. She was like, thanks.

11:51

Cuz I guess everybody was giving her [ __ ] And she drove, she spun out in the race, you know, went out in a blaze of glory.

11:56

And uh yeah, I thought it was a really cool way to retire.

12:00

Some of your casual fans might not know that you're a licensed helicopter pilot. same hat. Look at it. I only got one hat. Look at that. It is the same hat. Hey, I'm a minimalist.

12:11

Flying a helicopter, learning how to do that, is one of the biggest accomplishments of my life because I did not do well in school and I was really nervous about ground school and all of that, uh me being able to pass.

12:20

And uh I actually discovered that if I'm into something that it's not it's it's not like those classes.

12:26

You you just, you know, you just went to school and they just whatever they were teaching you had to learn it. Right.

12:30

Whether it engaged your brain or not.

12:33

So, not saying I'm not a [ __ ] but I I was pretty surprised that I was able able to do that. So. Well, congrats, Bill. Thank you. Oh, I like that.

12:45

Is that a little cumin in there? Mhm. Oh, see? I cook. I like that.

12:52

I could eat a [ __ ] bucket of that.

12:56

So, it's interesting watching you on late shows cuz sometimes I get this sense that when you're watching the audience, they can't tell if it's okay to laugh or not.

13:03

From your perspective, are you amused by that or annoyed by that?

13:09

Um, there's just a lot of that right now.

13:12

There's just a lot of no, you know, you say something and people act like somebody just got hurt. I don't understand it.

13:20

But, you know, it's it's what the young people do and I respect it.

13:24

Yeah, most people out there are not fanning themselves every time somebody says something they they understand they understand context they understand two sides of the story they understand due process they understand all of this stuff like I think you should be allowed to disagree which is kind of seems to be going away. That went up a notch. Mhm.

13:48

This is one of these lingering ones.

13:50

Where you think you handled it.

13:52

And then it changes right? Yeah. You going for your milk?

13:57

Not until you do you know I'm going step for step with you.

13:59

I think milk is a coward.

13:59

I think that's a cowardly move.

14:02

Then I'm going to say ISIS wins. If you go for the milk.

14:07

I'm sweating right now dude. Mhm. That's [ __ ] hot. What's like annoying? Yeah.

14:13

What the [ __ ] would you do that to somebody's food? I don't know. Now it's a mission.

14:16

That was just all mhm and then this now we're in now we're in the rapids. It's going down.

14:22

Now we get to see who we are as men.

14:25

I might have to take the hat off dude.

14:27

Go ahead there's no shame in that you know the milk off.

14:30

ISIS wins but the hat that can come off.

14:32

I'm 50 dude you can't you can't be doing this to me.

14:35

Dabbing my forehead like a preacher.

14:39

So I want to take a wing to talk about the Monday morning podcast cuz you really on that wave early in fact you predate Joe Rogan and Mark Maron and I'm curious when you started doing blew by me.

14:51

You had a head start on all these guys man.

14:53

When you were doing it running.

14:55

When you were doing it back then did you feel like you were breaking new ground or has the podcast industry and it's explosion particularly in comedy surprised you?

15:03

It was just when I did it I was when I first started it was like 5 minutes.

15:04

I would call up to my eyes are watering.

15:07

I would just call up this this service be like hey it's Bill I'm going to be at the Comedy Works in Denver.

15:15

Oh you want to go to the show and it was only a couple minutes.

15:18

Then just kept getting longer and longer and longer and longer.

15:21

Yeah I kind of learned how to podcast as it just grew.

15:24

So, I grew as a podcaster, I hope.

15:28

And then there's this push to make content shorter, more snackable.

15:29

But comedians in particular seem to be comfortable uploading these 4-hour-long sit-downs.

15:36

Do you think for the comic mind there's a certain freedom in that kind of medium?

15:42

No, I'm probably just lazy.

15:44

I don't want to sit here editing this. Woah, that is hot.

15:50

How do advertisers react when you goof in the ad reads?

15:52

Do you find that companies kind of get it more often?

15:55

I lost I think probably lost one with the toilet seat company today.

16:01

Sometimes you just got to burn one.

16:03

You just got to burn one and be like, "All right, you know, I'll give you your money back cuz this [ __ ] is just stupid."

16:07

[ __ ] electric toilet seat with a remote control.

16:09

I'm supposed to seriously sell that?

16:12

Dude, you barely even touched your water, man. You're a [ __ ] pro. Oh, we're going again?

16:17

That's how the game is supposed to fighting the champ, right?

16:17

You're like, "All right, it's round five, you know?"

16:20

You didn't realize he was he was just No, he was just sizing you up. All right. It's called the bomb.

16:34

I'm going to throw up now. That must taste awful. Yeah.

16:39

I got to imagine that this is just the beginning of the awful of this one.

16:45

I might be hitting the water soon. Hit the water?

16:48

Dude, I'm almost I'm almost done with water. Oh my god. I can barely talk.

16:58

So, as we've touched on, you're a huge sports fan.

17:02

And I was impressed to learn that you've been to almost every major sports stadium in what, like 10 straight Rose Bowls?

17:08

Am I supposed to answer that, dude?

17:10

Holy [ __ ] In the FOODIE YOU WIN, MILK. I know I did.

17:15

All right, I'm going to I got to go milk.

17:19

And the foodie revolution has infiltrated It's room temperature.

17:21

Who does that to somebody?

17:24

And the foodie revolution has really infiltrated the stadium.

17:25

And I'm curious, do you have any thoughts when you see a 2-ft long tamale-laden dog at a baseball my throat.

17:33

or creme brulee French toast being served at Fenway Park?

17:37

Don't breathe through your mouth.

17:37

It goes into your throat. Oh, don't touch my eyes. Mhm.

17:43

Dude, what the [ __ ] That's worse than India.

17:48

Not saying India is a bad place.

17:48

Do I have to apologize now? I got to walk it off. Yeah, yeah. Go ahead. Take a lap. Take a lap, Bill. Oh my god.

17:59

Dude, that's the hottest [ __ ] thing I've ever ate. Yeah. Oh my god.

18:03

Oh, [ __ ] It's not going away. Mhm. Mhm. Oh my god. Mhm.

18:13

So, the foodie revolution has really infiltrated the sports stadium.

18:18

I don't give a [ __ ] what people eat.

18:20

I just hate the flat screen TVs. All right. It's out of my eyes now. Mhm.

18:25

That's a good place to be. Oh my god.

18:27

Headed in the right direction.

18:29

Why did I think I was going to be able to do this?

18:31

Craft beer is another thing that's infiltrated the stadium.

18:33

And you know, when I was a kid, you'd go to a game it would just be dad brands.

18:36

It would just be Budweiser, Old Style.

18:37

And now there are like 10 local IPAs on tap.

18:39

I know that you get really into the weeds of good food, good cigars.

18:44

Have you been bitten by the craft beer bug? Oh, no. I hate those beers.

18:50

I hate how they always have tough names.

18:52

You know, go [ __ ] yourself ale, slap your mother lager.

18:56

Wicked [ __ ] whatever the [ __ ] they call it.

19:00

They're just super hoppy.

19:02

I got to ask you a question.

19:02

Is it all in your nose right now? Is that normal?

19:05

Or did I just touch Oh, no.

19:05

I touched it with my hands.

19:07

Yeah, you know, you got to be careful.

19:10

It's a little bit of that. contaminated. Right.

19:11

But you don't want it to get worse.

19:14

[ __ ] Oh dude, [ __ ] this.

19:20

I don't know about this dude.

19:20

I don't know if I can make this. You can do it, Bill. You can do it. What What is the upside?

19:25

I already promoted the [ __ ] cartoon.

19:32

What do you think is the most [ __ ] miserable right now. Yeah, I know, Bill. I know.

19:34

I've seen a lot of crazy [ __ ] from this side of the table. Have you? Yeah. But you know what?

19:38

I should have watched this [ __ ] before I came here. Ugh. Wow.

19:51

That was [ __ ] like That was an experience.

19:58

Dude, this is [ __ ] nuts.

20:01

So since leaving Boston, you split your time between New York and Los Angeles.

20:05

What I want to do is bounce a few points of comparison with those cities, and you tell me which city reigns supreme. Sound good? Yep, sure.

20:12
