I was born in 1976 in Sri Lanka.

Kind of a pretty typical developing third world country to be completely honest.

And when I left it was at the beginning of a very protracted ethnic civil war.

And so we moved in 1986 where my dad became an atache for the Sri Lankan embassy to Canada.

And that's where you know I spent my most formative years from 6 to about 22.

We grew up in um you know during apartheid and what was going to come next was uncertain and so everyone that could found ways to leave.

My parents are documentary filmmakers and they wanted to they had a dream.

They had a bumper sticker that they got in South Africa and they put it on the bookshelf in my bedroom and it said go for gold and it was a dream to go to America and make it in Hollywood.

My family moved to the United States when I was 5 years old.

We moved to [music] Memphis, Tennessee.

And when I was 10 years old, we became [music] citizens.

Three of my best friends, my besties, all from different parts of the world.

I was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, which is the last [music] exit on the R train.

What was it like in Brooklyn in the 70s and ' 80s?

Well, New York was a pretty rough place then.

Uh you've seen pictures and movies where there are gangsters, Hell's Angels, gangs, graffiti everywhere. That was my childhood.

And I I grew up in my dad's bar in Brooklyn. It was called Beards.

And I got to experience entrepreneurship watching my father run his business.

>> In the beginning of the 2000s, a lot of [music] the smartest people in my class, I graduated from electrical engineering at the University of Wateroo.

They all came to the US and it was right at the height of the do-com bubble and I thought to myself, why are all these smart people going down here? What is happening?

America is a [music] place where you can accomplish whatever you set out to accomplish.

If you work hard and you're smart and you do [music] the right things, this is a country where you can accomplish great things.

And >> nowhere in the world are people rooting for each other like America.

When you're an American and you say, "I'm going to try something." People go, "Fuck yeah. You should do it. Tell me more."

I was just in awe and I thought, "This is like no other place on earth."

was just just an incredibly hopeful place and it just represented a total microcosm of life that I just didn't feel existed anywhere else.

Doesn't matter what your background is, where you came from, your religion, color of your skin.

None of those things matter because in this country, everyone has the opportunity to do anything they want.

It's the place where you can go and be a little bit crazy and and say heterodox things, think heterodox things, start heterodox ideas.
