Adam Rippon Competes in the Olympics of Eating Spicy Wings | Hot Ones

0:00

My mouth hurts so bad and I'm trying so hard to tell you just a story about my life. That's the show.

0:12

Hey, what's going on everybody?

0:12

For First We Feast, I'm Sean Evans and you're watching Hot Ones.

0:15

It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.

0:18

And today I'm joined by Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon.

0:19

He's the breakout star of the 2018 Winter Games, a bronze medal winner who stole the hearts of millions on the ice and off and you can catch him in the 2018 Stars on Ice tour coming to a city near you.

0:31

Adam, welcome to the show.

0:32

Sean, thanks for having me.

0:33

So, you've been doing round-the-clock press.

0:35

I can only imagine that you just want to go home and take a nap.

0:37

What's going through your head now that you pulled up a seat at this circus?

0:42

Sean, I won the hearts of millions and now I'm ready to just [ __ ] my brains.

0:45

I feel like pretty good with everything and then the ones with like the explosives are where I'm worried.

1:12

And then woah woah Reverse. This Oh, like this. Yeah. Okay, got it. Okay. Jesus Christ. Right. Yeah.

1:26

Oh, this is actually delicious.

1:32

Okay, I'm a little worried cuz I can taste like the pepper.

1:36

So, there's so much about the games that we don't get to see.

1:37

So, if you'll humor me, I'm curious about your experience off the ice.

1:42

Can I talk with my mouth full? Yeah.

1:43

You get a long leash here on Hot Ones. Okay.

1:46

Which country do you think got the best fit off during the opening ceremonies? Mhm.

1:52

Sean, you know the answer. It's the guy from Tonga.

1:59

He was hot as [ __ ] It's like sub-zero and you're going there greased up.

2:04

Listen, I've done that before. It's not pretty. I'm going to die here.

2:15

As somebody in their first Olympics with a spotlight on you, what's the pressure to perform like?

2:19

Does it feel that much heavier than the other major events in your career?

2:24

You know, the Olympics is such a funny event.

2:26

When you walk in and it's just like every other arena you've ever competed in.

2:31

The part that you don't ever get prepared for is all of the media.

2:35

And uh for me, that meant going into the media just saying what was on my mind, being a little trashy, having a little fun.

2:45

Sean, you'd know me well enough now you know I like little fun.

2:48

Very happy to have you in the seat.

2:50

I feel comfortable in this seat. It's a nice seat.

2:52

We actually just upgraded the chairs, too.

2:54

Yeah, I can tell this is a nice leatherette.

2:56

I'd be lying if I didn't tell you that I was heading into some jumps and I was like, "If I [ __ ] this up, Leslie Jones is going to be like blasting my ass on Twitter."

3:07

She didn't though cuz I didn't mess it up. Yum.

3:13

These are some of the delish. I love this one. Louisiana? Mhm.

3:19

And the Bronx is so good.

3:20

Hey, we'll stack them up.

3:20

We'll put them in your bag, Adam. Mhm. Look at that bag.

3:26

I want to talk about the Adam Rippon effect in the media because it was crazy to see in real time from where I sit.

3:30

I can only imagine what it's like from your perspective.

3:33

And in particular, I noticed it's your finger snapping swagger.

3:37

It's like chum in the water for a lot of these bloggers that want to make internet-friendly news pieces.

3:41

So, what I want to do is read four headlines about you.

3:45

And I want you to tell me which one wasn't written by a major media organization, okay? Okay.

3:52

Nine amazing Adam Rippon quotes that'll make you go yes.

3:54

Adam Rippon says he's a hot mess.

3:57

Why Adam Rippon is the woke bae we don't deserve.

4:00

And Olympic glamazon Adam Rippon says haters are his motivators. My dad must be so proud.

4:12

I'm going to say why is Adam Rippon the woke bae we don't deserve.

4:15

Ding ding ding ding ding. I know my headlines. Nailed it. Nailed it. You know your headlines. Yes, I do.

4:19

I'm the meme we've been looking for.

4:22

The meme we don't deserve.

4:22

The meme that makes us say yes. Yes. Mhm. This is good.

4:35

I'm afraid of the one that's um red.

4:39

I think that's still in the like not top three territory.

4:43

But it flirts with Don't we all? I flirted with chaos. Mhm. On Tinder.

4:51

You know, the Olympic Village has this reputation for being the sex-fueled Mardi Gras.

4:54

And I wonder what were your expectations of it going into it?

4:55

And then what's the reality of the situation? Expectations? Condom brothel. Reality? Not.

5:09

A little more tame than you were expecting. Yeah.

5:10

I was expecting hot box orgy.

5:12

And what I got was stress box diarrhea.

5:19

And then there's that great story about you eating In-N-Out on the roof with Mirai Nagasu lamenting the fact that you didn't make the Olympics four and a half years ago.

5:26

If you were eating a double-double now with the same magical impact on your life, where do you think you'll be four and a half years from now?

5:35

All I have to say is those In-N-Out meats, those are magic meats.

5:41

So basically, if you are depressed, eat a burger and four years later you'll go to the Olympics. What's your mentality?

5:53

You just take one bite and you're like, "I did the thing."

5:56

So at this point I don't feel like I have a ton to prove, but I'll kind of mirror That's debatable. I'll mirror the guest. You know what I mean?

6:03

So the more hammer the guest is going on the wings, the more hammer I'll go on the wings.

6:06

If the guest is kind of just putting their feet in the shallow end, then I'll just put my feet in the shallow end, you know? Mhm.

6:13

So wherever you go, I'll go, Adam. You drive. All right. I've been driving. All right, Adam.

6:17

Well, we have a recurring segment on our show called explain that gram where we do a deep dive on our guest's Instagram, pull interesting pictures that need more context.

6:23

So I'll bust out the laptop, I'll show you the picture, and you tell me the bigger story. Does that sound good? Mhm.

6:30

Ooh, this is a hotter than I thought it was originally. Yeah.

6:34

All right, first things first.

6:36

Uh they used to call me Barry Bonds. Little League throwback. Mhm.

6:40

I used to be a baseball player. Here's the thing. I wasn't good. No. And I wasn't great. I was actually terrible.

6:52

So I actually This is what That was a hot one. Get it? Uh I'm getting worried.

7:02

Um And then one time I went up to bat, as they say. That's our lingo.

7:12

And I got hit by the pitch. I started crying.

7:14

And they're like, "Take a base.

7:16

If you get hit by a pitch, you take a base." And I was like, Nice.

7:21

Yeah, so then I got in trouble with my parents cuz I'd go up to bat and I'd be like, "Uh" and get hit by the pitches all the time.

7:29

So the moral of that story You got to do what you got to do to help the team win. Thank you.

7:34

You took the words right out of my mouth. There you go, Adam.

7:36

This is pre-Oscars with Jeremy Scott. Yes.

7:39

So I love Mason Jeremy Scott because I think Jeremy Scott is a genius and he's crazy and his ideas are bizarre and wild and I'm crazy, bizarre, and wild. It matches.

7:51

Some people have called me a genius. Like I don't agree. Like I do a little.

7:56

Like I understand, but And when Jeremy took the classic tuxedo and he took the shoulders out and we added that harness to it where it felt like you were kind of strapped into the tuxedo, I just felt really [ __ ] cool.

8:12

And when we were first doing it, Jeremy's like, "Don't wear a shirt."

8:16

And I was like, "You're right. I shouldn't do that."

8:21

And then the whole team around me was like, "Adam, you're going to wear a shirt."

8:25

And I was like, "Oh, yeah. You're right. It's the Oscars."

8:28

So, it could have been even more.

8:28

You could have just pushed it even more almost.

8:30

So, if we're up to you, if we're up If it were up to me, I would always push it more. Oh god. Yeah, I'm getting it.

8:47

Oh, that hurts my throat. Mhm. Still going in though. Mhm. I came here hungry.

8:56

I'm going to leave here sick.

8:59

So, one of the things that separates figure skating from everything else is the soundtrack.

9:02

How important is the music to the routine?

9:05

The music is so important.

9:05

A lot of um high-level skaters work with a DJ to like customize the tracks.

9:11

So, a lot of times, even if it's a song that sounds familiar, it's a completely like remastered track specifically for that skater and specifically for the way that elements are set in the program.

9:24

So, you feel like, "Wow, this is really like a performance made for that." And it's because it is.

9:32

What's the most played out song to skate to?

9:34

Recently been allowed to skate to lyrics in the last 4 years.

9:38

Which opens up the catalog. Oh, fully.

9:39

So, you can skate to literally whatever you want.

9:41

I could honestly, if I wanted to, skate to the audio of this interview. If I wanted to.

9:50

Listen, maybe I'm asking the wrong person.

9:52

Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree, but how is it that yeah, a figure skater can pull a song and then they can play whatever song and then broadcast it on TV all over the globe, but then on Hot Ones, I can't sing along to a T-Pain track and clear it.

10:08

How do you sound when you sing the T-Pain track? doing Go Hard.

10:12

I was doing Go Hard with T-Pain.

10:14

And then we were and then we cut up the episode and then we tried to put it out and then like legal was like, "Whoa, we can't clear this." Really?

10:21

Yeah, I'm like getting bleeped and stuff. That's don't.

10:24

They they they take my voice and they hide it from the world, Adam. That's not fair.

10:27

People tried to do that to me, too, once. And I said, "Uh-uh. Not anymore."

10:37

I won't get scared until I get to the next one.

10:40

But this is the one that scares me cuz it's red. Going in.

10:54

This is hot, but it's really enjoyable.

10:56

All right, Adam, like you, I once had Olympic dreams.

10:58

I made some noise in juniors, but due to an Achilles injury, I had to hang up the skates.

11:02

But in honor of your appearance here, me and Chris, we went over to that rink in Central Park and put together a Hot Ones free skate for you.

11:11

So, I'm going to play you the footage that we pulled.

11:16

Basically, you can just score it like you would as a judge.

11:19

You can let me know if I still got it. Okay.

11:22

So, here's me hitting it. Mhm. Wow, this is great. Wow.

11:28

You look like you have a lot of support. Emotional, though. Mhm.

11:34

And oh, oh, nice for That's beautiful. Oh.

11:39

You are very into the upper body.

11:42

Do the judges like stuff like that? Yeah, I think so.

11:44

I mean, as a judge in this situation, I really enjoyed it.

11:52

Right there is when you see the Achilles injury really come through.

11:56

And then, you know, I think that there's three major parts to rounding out your skating persona.

12:00

You know, there's the costume. Body. And soul. Those three things.

12:06

But, on the costume side, right, would a full-on Sriracha bottle onesie be too much?

12:13

I'm going to say too little. Why didn't you do that?

12:15

Why are you looking back now and being like, "I [ __ ] up." ?

12:20

Well, I'm just laying the groundwork. You know what I mean?

12:22

I'm I'm looking forward to Beijing, basically.

12:26

I I didn't want to say it. I'm glad you did.

12:29

What song do you think I should skate to?

12:31

Probably the T-Pain song that you weren't allowed to hear on the show.

12:35

And then, what about the signature move?

12:37

Cuz I was thinking about going with this bottle sauce shake move, but I don't want anything to get lost in translation. Yeah.

12:43

Uh That See, that was lost on me.

12:48

That's not originally where my head had gone.

12:51

Um I appreciated the intent. Um Don't do that. Yeah, now I'm scared. Now I'm scared.

13:01

I don't know why I said it. I heard myself say that.

13:10

Oh, somebody got really nervous when I did that. Hey, this one's not bad. Well, mhm.

13:24

Are you putting up a front, Adam, or is this like for real? You're just no problem. That's like warm. Oh my god.

13:32

You're a [ __ ] There are a lot of times in competition where you feel like [ __ ] but I always put on this calm and cool front.

13:43

And I'm doing that right now.

13:49

Yeah, I'm I'm I'm trying not to talk because like the wind from my voice is like making my body hurt right now.

13:59

Well, speaking of, you recently set the record straight on an internet rumor that you had butt pads during competition tweeting, "No, it's just my real butt.

14:08

Thank you for your interest."

14:10

But as anyone who follows you on Instagram knows, it's the abs that are the real star of the show.

14:14

Can you give me some tips on how to get Adam Rippon ripped for summer? Leg raises?

14:19

Am I doing cable crunches? All the above?

14:24

What do I need to do to get that eight-pack?

14:33

Can I spit into Yeah, yeah.

14:34

You wouldn't be the first one.

14:38

It just felt like extra spit I didn't need.

14:41

So, I work on my core every single day.

14:46

This is honestly like terrible. Yeah, yeah.

14:50

Abs recover really quickly.

14:50

They'll recover in a day, so you can work on them every single day.

14:53

So, I balance that in with cardio, get the blood flowing, do all of those crunches. You're doing leg lifts.

14:59

You do a lot of stuff like overextending the abs and then bringing them up so that you can stretch them out.

15:06

And then How about those pesky lower abs?

15:15

Cuz sometimes I can kind of frame it out up top.

15:19

It's just it It snap together in the lower abs.

15:23

I think one thing that might help is if you weren't having so much [ __ ] chicken. I'm My lips hurt. Yeah. I'm so sorry. Like I can't help it.

15:38

Like I can't keep spitting.

15:45

But I can't stop drooling. What did you even say?

15:50

I'm like going into a blackout. What? Who did this?

16:01

This [ __ ] is [ __ ] No.

16:15

So we can't have an Adam Rippon interview without talking about your Twitter game, the clap backs, the motivational messages.

16:20

They become the stuff of internet legend.

16:21

When you're scrolling your Twitter mentions, what are the things that you see that warm your heart, and what are the things that you see that make you want to throw your phone under a Zamboni?

16:32

Nice nod to the equipment.

16:34

It's often um not appreciated.

16:38

I'm going to tell you a few tips of the trade.

16:42

The things that I love, there are some crazy talented fans that I have that put together fan art.

16:46

I'm going to keep this very close to me. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

16:48

It's just like the essence essence of um a mother's milk.

16:56

Um I love when somebody is kind of sassy to me, but in a funny way where I can tell that they're just being fun.

17:01

I love when people tweet at me and they say, "Thanks, Dad." I love that.

17:09

I do get some hate on Twitter. That's true.

17:12

But I don't respond to anything unless the person writing the tweet is just completely stupid.

17:21

And I like to respond to like completely stupid Does this count as cardio?

17:30

Just the kind that gives you the top abs.

17:32

Yeah, not those lower those pesky lower Not the pesky lowers. Yeah. Not the pesky bottoms.

17:40

I've run into a few of them recently. This is the last dab.

17:50

We call it the last dab because it's traditional around here to put a little extra on the last wing.

17:55

I just went berserk on that.

17:55

Try to make a smaller dab than that should you dare to do it. Very deliberate. Up. All right. That's a pesky bottom.

18:12

You call that a pesky bottom.

18:12

Look at this pesky bottom.

18:15

I've been staring at them the whole show. I'm so sorry.

18:22

This is like your work and you have to come back here. All right.

18:26

Do you take a bite of that? That would be the point.

18:29

Oh, that's why we did that. Yeah. All right, my friend. Cheers. Cheers, Adam. Okay, now I'm burping.

19:01

Um I think I've lost control of like the upper half of my body. Okay, Adam.

19:10

You've you've an inspiration to many and now that you have a trillion Scovilles going through you, I want to know, what's your message to the people who said that you couldn't slay on the biggest international stage and to the people who didn't think that you'd take down the wings of death?

19:28

To my haters that thought I wouldn't do this to my doubters who thought that this wouldn't happen.

19:40

There will be some naysayers.

19:46

But [ __ ] them, we did it. We did it, my man.

19:47

I saw the Olympian in you.

19:51

I saw the mind over matter.

19:51

I saw the guy who would go in for extra bites even when he was at his edge and now look at you with a glow, with a shine.

20:02

It's like the podium all over again and now there's nothing left to do but roll out the red carpet for you, my friend.

20:08
